But the affection that myself and so many others have for Bean is rooted in personas, and not the man, because we don\u2019t <\/span>really<\/span><\/i> know the man at all. However occasionally, we gain some insight into what the people we blindly ascribe so many positive attributes to think and feel about certain things, <\/span>and the truth can leave you feeling deflated.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n In a recent interview with <\/span>The Times<\/span><\/a>, Bean was candid about his thoughts on intimacy coordinators, a now common but relatively recent introduction on film and TV productions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cI should imagine it slows down the thrust of it,\u201d he said of how actors on sets decades ago might have reacted to the mapping out of a sex scene with a qualified professional, rather than the off-the-cuff approach that was not just widespread practice, but the only practice.<\/span><\/p>\n Bean added: \u201cHa, not the thrust, that\u2019s the wrong word. It would spoil the spontaneity. It would inhibit me more because it\u2019s drawing attention to things. Somebody saying, \u2018Do this, put your hand there, while you touch his thing\u2026\u2019 I think the natural way lovers behave would be ruined by someone bringing it right down to a technical exercise.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Bean\u2019s comments, while disappointing, are not unsurprising.<\/span> He has operated within certain parameters for the vast majority of his long and illustrious career. To change those parameters does, of course, seem a shame (if it ain\u2019t broke\u2026), or the death of the<\/span>\u00a0\u2018good old days\u2019 that were not, as we know, so good for scores of women<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n But new measures, such as intimacy coordinators, are not for the benefit of Bean. Sure, men can gain invaluable insight from their input as they really<\/em> consider how their female counterpart is feeling in a given moment. It\u2019s an opportunity to reevaluate entrenched behaviours that harm women. <\/span>But first and foremost, the practice was <\/span>introduced to protect women given that they are the ones who have been and continue to be subjected to the lion\u2019s share of abuse and exploitation<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n Losing that \u201cspontaneity\u201d Bean values so highly is a small price to pay for women feeling safe doing the work that they love, and t<\/span>hat painfully obvious truth should have stopped him dead in his tracks before pressing ahead and laying it on the table.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n It also suggests that Bean hasn\u2019t worked under the guidance of an intimacy coordinator, or spent time in the company of the most accomplished of the bunch. I\u2019ve spoken to multiple actors who have praised those facilitators for making their jobs significantly easier, and even making their approach to sex scenes more intuitive.<\/span><\/p>\n Speaking to RadioTimes.com<\/a> about the excellent BBC comedy Cheaters<\/a>, which utilised an intimacy coordinator, Susan Wokoma said: <\/span>\u201cI\u2019d only done one other sex scene [before Cheaters], and that was like, \u2018Off you go.\u2019 It was pretty embarrassing, and I can\u2019t believe that\u2019s been the norm because actually, what having choreography, or at least a couple of discussions means, is it makes you braver, actually. It made me braver. I lost a lot of inhibition in the process at certain points.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s really safe, and everybody\u2019s intentions are good, and the scenes aren\u2019t weird. And\u00a0<\/span>I think that people sometimes think that if something is really choreographed or rehearsed, it takes the spontaneity out of it. And I just don\u2019t believe that. When it comes to anything that\u2019s intimate on screen, it\u2019s worth it. I feel like knowing exactly what you\u2019re doing, knowing that you can agree to something, or say no, makes you go further.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Normal People<\/a> and Sex Education<\/a> are also shows which employed intimacy coordinators and the casts of both have publicly praised their involvement. It should also be noted that the end product in both, particularly the former, has never looked better, as I previously discussed in this review<\/a>.<\/span><\/p> I\u2019m certain that Bean would say he\u2019s sympathetic to the concerns of women (who wouldn\u2019t be given the horrors and indignities that come with the territory?!), but the cognitive dissonance on display in that interview communicates the inverse. Bean and his male peers will naturally have had their various respective challenges to weather over the course of their lives and careers, but they will never understand the alienating feeling of being on the back foot for the simple fact of being a woman.<\/span><\/p>\n Had that safety net been put in place aeons ago, countless female performers could have been protected from predatory behaviour, and in turn the industry transformed.
