Jeremy Paxman has announced he will be stepping down from presenting University Challenge.<\/p>\n
The host has been the face of the tough quiz show for an incredible 28 years, and will film his final episode this autumn.<\/p>\n
Speaking of his news, Paxman said: \u201cI\u2019ve had a blast hosting this wonderful series for nearly 29 years. I\u2019ve been lucky enough to work with an amazing team and to meet some of the swottier brains in the country. It gives me\u00a0hope for the future.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Executive Producer of University Challenge, Peter Gwyn, added: \u201cJeremy has been our presenter, colleague and friend for twenty-eight years, and everyone on the University Challenge production team will miss him greatly. He\u2019ll be sorely missed too\u00a0by both our audience and\u00a0by the generations of students who\u2019ve relished the chance to pit themselves\u00a0against him in more than a thousand matches.\u201d\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n
Kate Phillips, BBC\u2019s Director of Unscripted, shared: \u201cSince the BBC revived University Challenge in 1994 Jeremy has been at the front and centre of the show\u2019s success and is without doubt one of the world\u2019s finest, and most formidable quizmasters. We are hugely grateful to Jeremy for his dedication to the programme for an incredible 28 years, he will be much missed by us all and the show\u2019s millions of viewers.\u201d<\/p>
Paxman took on the role in 1994 for a revived series following Bamber Gascoigne\u2019s stint between 1962 and 1987.<\/p>\n
A new presenter will be announced this week, the BBC confirmed.<\/p>\n
