There are “big plans” for the soap to “evolve” in the next few years. <\/p>

EastEnders remains \u201ca very important part\u201d of the BBC\u2019s schedule despite declining overnight viewing figures, according to the broadcaster\u2019s Chief Content Officer.<\/p>\n

Speaking at this year\u2019s Edinburgh International TV Festival, Charlotte Moore said there are plans to \u201cevolve [the soap] creatively\u201d under Chris Clenshaw, who became executive producer earlier in 2022.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think with the changing nature of viewing, it\u2019s changing the way soaps are being watched and consumed,\u201d said Moore. \u201cEastEnders<\/a> is such an important title for us, it\u2019s the most popular young audience title we have on iPlayer in terms of the volume of people it brings in every week.<\/p>\n

\u201cChris Clenshaw is our new showrunner \u2013 he\u2019s fantastic. He\u2019s got big plans to evolve EastEnders creatively in the next few years. It\u2019s an incredibly important title.\u201d<\/p>

This year has seen the soap\u2019s overnight ratings hit an all-time low as new episodes \u2013 already available to watch on iPlayer \u2013 were broadcast on BBC Two, to make way for Wimbledon coverage on BBC One.<\/p>\n

Addressing the decline, Moore said: \u201cOf course, we are all seeing the way audiences are shifting \u2013 young audiences are shifting more than any other and they are looking at different titles across different platforms, so we would be mad not to see those shifts and those changing tastes and those changing attitudes.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut do I think that soap will still play a part in the ecology of television in an on-demand and iPlayer world for some time? Absolutely. I think it\u2019s really, really important.\u201d<\/p>\n

Moore went on to insist that EastEnders was \u201cunique\u201d in the BBC\u2019s schedule in allowing the broadcaster to \u201ctalk about very timely issues that are very relevant to people living in the UK\u201d.<\/p>\n

She added: \u201cIt is the more younger-skewing of the soaps on television at the moment, the biggest younger-skewing soap, so again, that\u2019s a very important part that it plays.\u201d<\/p>\n
