Members of the show\u2019s cast and crew attended a panel at this year\u2019s Edinburgh International TV Festival, where executive producer Jane Tranter called Pullman\u2019s third novel \u201cprobably far and away the most complex of the books to adapt\u201d.<\/p>\n
She noted that Pullman had even been aware of this himself, telling the team before they started development on the new season: \u201cI\u2019m really sorry, I fear I\u2019ve left you with some terrible problems.\u201d<\/p>\n
Tranter said: \u201cOne of those \u2013 and it\u2019s not a problem obviously, it\u2019s a wonderful creative challenge and privilege \u2013 but one of those is lots of things happen or you\u2019re given a lot of information either through a narrating voice or Asriel is told something offscreen.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/picture><\/div>She noted that in season 3 \u201cwe had the joy of having James McAvoy back with us\u201d after his character was mostly absent during season 2, and said that as screenwriter Jack Thorne wanted to write for the actor, they were faced with dilemma because \u201cAsriel doesn\u2019t really come in [to the book] until significantly later\u201d.<\/p>\n
Tranter explained that McAvoy\u2019s role is therefore expanded in the series, with a new character added for him to interact with in these new scenes.<\/p>
Earlier this year at the BFI & Radio Times Television Festival the team behind the show spoke about their feelings as it comes to an end<\/a>, with star Ruth Wilson saying: \u201cWe said goodbye to it last year. And it was sad. It was really sad to say goodbye to monkey and [lead puppeteer] Brian [Fisher] and everyone.<\/p>\n \u201cBut we\u2019ll work again together.
