Cary Joji Fukunaga, director of the next James Bond film, has revealed he discussed potential replacements for Daniel Craig when it appeared the 007 actor had quit the franchise.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Total Film<\/a>, Craig admitted that after sustaining an injury filming 2015\u2019s Spectre, he believed he was \u201cphysically not capable of doing another\u201d Bond movie.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor me, it was very cut and dried that I wasn\u2019t coming back,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was so exhausted after that film,\u201d added 007 producer Barbara Broccoli. \u201cWe\u2019d had our own trials and tribulations on Spectre<\/a>, and [Daniel] had a massive injury. It was very difficult. So he just needed some time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Craig eventually signed up for one more film, No Time to Die<\/a>, which is set for release in September following repeated delays amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n

However, in the period before he agreed to return, No Time to Die director Fukunaga met with Broccoli and \u201cspit-balled\u201d ideas for Craig\u2019s replacement.<\/p>

\u201cTwo years ago I took Barbara to my favourite Japanese restaurant in New York,\u201d he explained. \u201cI tried to wine and dine her. At that point Daniel said he wasn\u2019t doing another one, so we spit-balled all the potential new Bonds \u2013 that was exciting.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just told her what I loved about Bond and what it meant to me growing up. And just that I\u2019d be honoured if they\u2019d consider me for the next one.\u201d<\/p>\n

Though Danny Boyle was originally hired to direct Bond 25, he later departed the project and Fukunaga was hired as his replacement.<\/p>\n

No Time to Die is now set as Craig\u2019s final Bond film, his fifth across a period of 15 years, with actors including Outlander<\/a>\u2018s Sam Heughan<\/a> and Bridgerton<\/a>\u2018s Rege-Jean Page<\/a> among the bookies\u2019 favourites to replace him.<\/p>\n
