Pok\u00e9mon natures were first introduced in Generation 3 of the main gaming series (Ruby\/Sapphire), with each Pok\u00e9mon being randomly assigned one nature from a total of 25.<\/p>\n
Each nature that your Pok\u00e9mon is listed as having increases one of its stats by 10 per cent and decreases another by 10 per cent.<\/p>\n
For example, a Pok\u00e9mon listed as being \u2018brave\u2019 will have a higher than usual attack stat.<\/p>\n

You can check which nature your Pok\u00e9mon has by looking at their summary.<\/p>\n

- Bashful:<\/strong> no effect<\/li>\n

- Calm:<\/strong> increases Special Attack, reduces Attack<\/li>\n
- Careful:<\/strong> increases Special Defence, reduces Special Attack<\/li>\n
- Docile:<\/strong> no effect<\/li>\n
- Gentle:<\/strong> increases Special Defence, reduces Defence<\/li>\n
- Hardy:<\/strong> no effect<\/li>\n
- Hasty:<\/strong> increases Speed, reduces Defence<\/li>\n
- Impish:<\/strong> increases Defence, reduces Special Attack<\/li>\n
- Jolly:<\/strong> increases Speed, reduces Special Attack<\/li>\n
- Lax:<\/strong> increases Defence, reduces Special Defence<\/li>\n
- Lonely:<\/strong> increases Attack, reduces Defence<\/li>\n

When out in the wild, many trainers will catch several of the same Pok\u00e9mon in a bid to find one with a desired nature best suited to the Pok\u00e9mon\u2019s strengths and weaknesses.<\/p>\n
A Pok\u00e9mon\u2019s nature also influences which berries and PokeBlocks it likes as each flavour is linked to a stat:<\/p>\n
- Attack:<\/strong> Spicy<\/li>\n
- Attack:<\/strong> Dry<\/li>\n
- Defence:<\/strong> Sour<\/li>\n
- Defence:<\/strong> Bitter<\/li>\n
- Speed:<\/strong> Sweet<\/li>\n<\/ul>
In Sword\/Shield, Pok\u00e9mon trainers also have the option of changing their Pok\u00e9mon\u2019s nature by purchasing \u2018Mints\u2019 at the Battle Tower once you have completed the main storyline.<\/p>\n
Mints overwrite a Pok\u00e9mon\u2019s nature by changing both the increased and lowered stats affected by its nature.<\/p>\n
How to use Pok\u00e9mon natures in battle<\/strong><\/h2>\n
Weaponising your Pok\u00e9mon\u2019s nature is an easy way to get the upper hand in battles. To take advantage of the mechanic, increase the stat a Pok\u00e9mon excels at and reduce another that they will never use.<\/p>\n
In the long run, it\u2019s recommended to boost the stat your Pok\u00e9mon is already good at, rather than wasting energy on trying to up a stat that will always be weaker due to your Pok\u00e9mon\u2019s nature.<\/p>\n
For instance with a timid Pikachu, their nature will increase speed and lower attack, so to make the most of its nature and maximise its potential, up its speed stat as much as possible.<\/p>\n
