Brian Cox has explained how the origin of his fan favourite Succession<\/a> character Logan Roy was changed partway through production on the show\u2019s first season.<\/p>\n

Logan is patriarch to the highly dysfunctional Roy family, which owns a sprawling media organisation that his children are constantly squabbling for control over should he step down.<\/p>\n

In the show, the character\u2019s backstory is defined as being born in Dundee, Scotland, in a nod to Cox\u2019s real-life hometown, but having relocated to Quebec, Canada, at an early age \u2013 hence the muted Scottish accent heard on the show.<\/p>\n

However, during a panel at the Edinburgh International TV Festival 2022, Cox explained how Logan\u2019s Scottish roots were a late stage addition as filming on the first season was nearing completion.<\/p>

\u201c[Exec producer] Adam McKay on the other hand thought it was a great idea, but Jesse said, \u2018No no, he\u2019s got to be American\u2019. So they decided in the pilot that I was born in Quebec, which isn\u2019t really America.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cox wouldn\u2019t discover that his suggestion had been taken onboard until months later, during a conversation with a fellow Succession cast<\/a> member amid production on the ninth episode of season 1.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeter Friedman, who plays Frank, said to me, \u2018I\u2019ve just done an ADR session: they\u2019ve changed your birthplace, you\u2019re not from Quebec anymore\u2019,\u201d recalled Cox.<\/p>\n

\u201cI said, \u2018So where am I born?\u2019 He said, \u2018I can\u2019t remember\u2026\u2019, and he goes and gets his device out and he goes, \u2018Oh yeah, somewhere called Dundee, Scotland\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n
