Also revealed during the panel was a first-look trailer for series 13 (at last!) and the arrival of new character Vinder, who is played by Game of Thrones star Jacob Anderson and will have a recurring role across multiple episodes.<\/p>\n
Comedian John Bishop will also be playing new character Dan Lewis in the upcoming series, adventuring through time and space alongside the Doctor Mandip Gill\u2019s Yaz \u2013 and the trio are certain to come up against all sorts of foes, familiar and otherwise.<\/p>
But more generally, what can Whovians expect from series 13? Which foes and other characters are returning, which new cast members should we be looking out for and which weird and wonderful points of time and space will the TARDIS be dropping our heroes off in?<\/p>\n

<\/div> BBC \/ Ben Blackall<\/i> <\/span>\n<\/div><\/strong><\/p>\nWhile there\u2019s no official premiere date for Doctor Who series 13 just yet, the BBC has revealed that the new episodes will be released in 2021<\/strong>, probably in autumn or winter towards the end of the year.<\/p>\n\u201cThe 13th series starts on BBC One later in 2021,\u201d the BBC said in a release, with executive producer Matt Strevens adding that fans would see new episodes \u201clater this year\u201d.<\/p>\n
There will be only eight episodes in series 13, three less than usual, in a move that allows the show to stick to its usual production cycle despite complicated new health and safety guidelines.<\/p>\n
More recently, it\u2019s been suggested that at least some of the episodes will air in 2022, possibly two specials, which could mean fans will see just six episodes onscreen this year.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs ever bosses are staying tight-lipped about what they have planned \u2013 but with filming still going on they clearly have plans for episodes to be playing out much later into 2022, so there\u2019s lots more to come for Jodie\u2019s Doctor,\u201d a BBC insider told RadioTimes.com<\/strong>.<\/p>\nIs there a trailer for Doctor Who series 13?<\/h2>\n\n

\u201cHer departure is top secret but at some point over the coming months the arrival of the 14th Doctor will need to be filmed. It\u2019s very exciting.\u201d<\/p>\n
But is this story actually true? Well, it\u2019s hard to say. When contacted by RadioTimes.com<\/strong> the BBC neither confirmed nor denied the report, instead declining to comment.<\/p>\n\u201cWe won\u2019t be commenting on any speculation around Jodie\u2019s future on the show,\u201d a spokesperson said.<\/div>\n\nUntil we get some sort of official confirmation, we\u2019ll keep this one in the \u201cmaybe\u201d column \u2013 though at the moment it seems fairly likely.\u00a0If true, we can imagine season 13 spending a good deal of time dealing with Whittaker\u2019s exit and the preamble to it, offering some clues about the storylines we may expect.<\/div>\n\nWhittaker herself has not revealed anything that would suggest there is any truth to the reports at this stage, and indeed in an interview last year she said that she didn\u2019t want to think about anything beyond Doctor Who just yet.<\/div>\n\nSpeaking to Entertainment Weekly<\/a> prior to the festive special in December, she said, \u201cAs far as I\u2019m concerned, right now, I\u2019m the Doctor and that\u2019s taking up everything of me, as an actor,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd to think something beyond that, I can\u2019t put my head there, and I don\u2019t want to.\u201d<\/div>\n\nAs for who could replace her, well, the preferred choice for a while was Olly Alexander, though the It\u2019s a Sin star later denied the reports. \u201cListen, I don\u2019t think I\u2019m saying anything out of line \u2013 I\u2019m not in the next series. I don\u2019t want to tease the fans,\u201d he told TV Choice Magazine.<\/p>\n
Still, it\u2019s possible Barrowman (who managed to keep Jack\u2019s involvement a secret for many months) is pulling our leg again and, even if he isn\u2019t, it may not be long before Captain Jack is back anyway.<\/p>\n
\u201cI mean if they ever ask Jack back I\u2019ll come back at the drop of a hat,\u201d Barrowman previously told RadioTimes.com<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\nHowever, any possibility of a Barrowman return has been made less likely by recent controversy, following accusations that the actor had frequently exposed himself on the sets of Torchwood and Doctor Who in the past.<\/p>\n
The allegations came to light after a 2014 video featuring his Doctor Who<\/a>\u00a0co-star Noel Clarke resurfaced. In the clip,\u00a0Clarke, who has been accused of sexual harassment on the set of Doctor Who<\/a>\u00a0and denies the allegations, said Barrowman would expose himself on the production.<\/p>\n\n\nBarrowman addressed allegations in a statement released to The Guardian, saying that his \u201chigh-spirited behaviour\u201d was \u201conly ever intended in good humour to entertain colleagues on set and backstage\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\nHe added: \u201cWith the benefit of hindsight, I understand that upset may have been caused by my exuberant behaviour and I have apologised for this previously. Since my apology in November 2008, my understanding and behaviour have also changed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, more monsters are coming back,\u201d Chibnall told Radio Times<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\u201cThere are ones who\u2019ve appeared over the past 15 years that are deserving of another visit in the next series. In fact, they\u2019re probably formulating their plans as we speak\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n
More recently, Jodie Whittaker and Mandip Gill confirmed some \u201cold\u201d monsters would be back, leading to speculation about which baddies they could be referring to.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m excited for our amazing Whovians to see some incredible interactions with old monsters,\u201d Whittaker said during a virtual Comic-Con@Home panel<\/p>\n
\u201cBecause that part is so good!\u201d added co-star Mandip Gill.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s so special to work with new monsters that we\u2019re the first people to interact with. And old monsters\u2026there\u2019s one in particular, I\u2019m so excited!\u201d<\/p>\n
We may already have a few clues about who to expect. Leaked filming photos appear to show the clone-warrior Sontarans (last seen regularly during the Matt Smith era of Doctor Who) sporting a new look for one episode, while another photo apparently showed a deadly Weeping Angel advancing on some victims.<\/p>\n
Currently, neither of these monster appearances have been officially confirmed by the BBC, and it\u2019s certainly possible the Weeping Angels were being filmed for a different project \u2013 but, if true, we certainly sound like we\u2019re in for some seriously spooky episodes.<\/p>\n
And after a little cameo for a Weeping Angel in New Year\u2019s special Revolution of the Daleks, we\u2019d say chances aren\u2019t looking too remote for their grand return.<\/p>\n
Speaking of the Daleks, it looks like the iconic baddies will be back once again after taking centre stage in the 2020 festive special, at least based on some leaked photos from the set.<\/p>\n
Jodie Whittaker, Mandip Gill and John Bishop were all spotted filming in Bristol in early June \u2013 as was long-term voice of the Daleks Nicholas Briggs and Dalek operators Nicholas Pegg and Barnaby Edwards. And what\u2019s more, a photo of crew members unloading a Dalek from a truck was also leaked \u2013 as sure a sign as any that they must be returning in season 13.<\/p>\n

And more recently, in an online Q&A Bishop gave some more details about how his character is introduced to Doctor Who.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe wants to base it in Liverpool because the series always begins from somewhere, the last one from Sheffield. And so he wanted it to be based in Liverpool and that\u2019s where the Doctor is going to get the new companion.\u201d<\/p>\n
It also appears we\u2019ll meet Dan\u2019s parents in his first episode, played by actors Sue Murphy and Paul Broughton.<\/p>\n
\u201cI did one thing with two Liverpool actors, Paul Broughton and Sue Murphy,\u201d Bishop said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey were playing my mum and dad and I swear to God, it was like a masterclass because the was a little bit where there\u2019s these aliens that have come down. They took over the world. My mom has found a way to knock them out with a wok.\u201d<\/p>\n
He added: \u201cThere\u2019s a scene where we\u2019re in the car with me mum and dad, and what was fantastic for me is they were \u2013 watching them play off each other, watching them acting while the other one was speaking \u2013 because they work so well together anyway, and honestly I\u2019ve just learned loads from that!\u201d<\/p>\n
Sounds like we\u2019re in for some more Who family drama when Dan makes his debut.<\/p>\n
Will coronavirus affect Doctor Who series 13?<\/h2>\n ![\""25"\"]( "\\"\"25\"\\"")
<\/div>\nThe COVID-19 pandemic shut down all sorts of TV productions and Doctor Who is among those affected.<\/p>\n
It appears that filming on season 13 was delayed by several weeks, but still kicked off at roughly the same time of year as was always intended.<\/p>\n
However, due to more complex filming practices necessitated by the health crisis, the upcoming season has had to shorten its run by three episodes to ensure production won\u2019t run over, and is structured as a serialised story<\/a> rather than the usual one-off episodes.<\/p>\nWho will star in Doctor Who series 13?<\/strong><\/h2>\n ![\""Doctor\"]( "\\"\"Vinder\\"")

\u201cT<\/span>he thing is\u2026 what I love about the Master is that you can put him in the darkest, most dangerous, most impossible situations\u2026 and he\u2019ll always find a way of getting out of them. How, I don\u2019t know!\u201d Dhawan told RadioTimes.com.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\nIf Whittaker is<\/em> leaving, it seems increasingly likely that Dhawan\u2019s Master could return for one last face-off \u2013 and the same logic would suggest that Jo Martin\u2019s mysterious Fugitive Doctor would turn up to resolve her storyline as well.<\/p>\nAnd indeed Martin has herself gone on record to state that she hopes to return to the show<\/a> \u2013 or perhaps even be given her own spin-off series.<\/p>\n\u201cOf course, of course,\u201d Martin said, when asked by RadioTimes.com<\/strong> if she\u2019d like to reprise her role.<\/p>\n\u201cWhat\u2019s not to like about that? I would absolutely love it. And they\u2019ve got John Bishop there now, haven\u2019t they? I\u2019m a big fan of his. I want a scene with him.\u201d<\/p>\n
She added: \u201cI think there\u2019s so much more story. What they set up opens up a world that we\u2019ve not fully explored within Doctor Who yet.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd you don\u2019t want to waste that costume. You know what I mean? That costume \u2013 it\u2019s a real waste of a costume because it\u2019s so swaggy, as they say. So I think that costume needs to get worn again by me.\u201d<\/p>\n
Of course, given the high profile return of John Barrowman last series and again in the festive special, viewers will be wondering if any other fan favourites from years gone by will be returning to the show.<\/p>\n
Donna Noble had been mooted for a return by some fans after Catherine Tate was allegedly spotted in Liverpool while a shoot was taking place, however those claims were denied by her representative.<\/p>\n
Some other former stars have also revealed they\u2019d love to return, with both Osgood star Ingrid Oliver and River Song actress Alex Kingston claiming they\u2019d love to team up with Jodie Whittaker before her time in the TARDIS is up.<\/p>\n
Oliver told RadioTimes.com<\/strong>,\u00a0\u201cJodie\u2019s Doctor is so funny and witty and high energy\u201d and said\u00a0she would love to see how Osgood would interact with her<\/a>.<\/p>\n\u201cI think it\u2019d be quite funny,\u201d she said. \u201cI think it\u2019d be a really funny dynamic, actually, and quite interesting to watch. Let\u2019s see what happens. I mean, let\u2019s do it. Let\u2019s do it!\u201d<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Kingston told RadioTimes.com<\/strong> it would be a \u201cgreat shame\u201d if River Song never met Jodie Whittaker\u2019s Doctor<\/a>.<\/p>\n\u201cIt would be a great shame if it were not to happen. Let\u2019s put it that way,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m open to anything. I don\u2019t have an idea about how we should meet or anything like that. But I would like River to meet her, and plant a big, fat kiss on her!\u201d<\/p>\n

We have very big, ambitious plans for our third series together.\u201d<\/p>\n
Presumably, if Jodie Whittaker is leaving then the major storyline will be the build-up to the Doctor\u2019s exit, with the Time Lord facing a chilling new threat as she builds to her final adventure.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, rumour has it that the season 13 filming currently underway involves iconic Crimean War nurse Mary Seacole, in keeping with the series\u2019 trend for emotional historical episodes in recent episodes, though this storyline has yet to be confirmed officially.<\/p>\n
And of course, certain revelations in the season 12 finale episode The Timeless Children \u2013 namely that the Doctor was a being from another dimension who was harvested by the Time Lords for regeneration<\/a>, and subsequently lived countless lifetimes that were later removed from her mind \u2013 are likely to be picked up in season 13 itself, especially after the Doctor mentions these issues again in 2021 festive special Revolution of the Daleks.<\/p>\n ![\""WARNING:\"]( "\\"\"20024546-low_res-doctor-who-series-12\"\\"")
<\/div>\nPerhaps, after being urged by Ryan (Tosin Cole) in that episode we\u2019ll see the Doctor investigate her past self and work out what missions she completed for the Division, or where she came from in the first place.<\/p>\n
As noted, it also seems likely that we\u2019ll see more from the \u201cnew\u201d incarnation of the Doctor (Jo Martin) introduced in series 12 episode Fugitive of the Judoon, who we\u2019d expect to cross paths with Whittaker once again before the latter leaves the series behind.<\/p>\n
Mandip Gill has suggested the series will also see Yaz continuing to deal with her former mental health issues.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s part of Yaz\u2019s journey now,\u201d she said. \u201cIt will affect, basically, her choices in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n
All that, plus the introduction of Bishop\u2019s new character Dan, are sure to make for a busy season. Plus, Chris Chibnall offered one clue during a virtual panel about the series: the word \u201cswarm.\u201d Hmmm\u2026.any guesses?<\/p>\n

<\/div> While there\u2019s no official premiere date for Doctor Who series 13 just yet, the BBC has revealed that the new episodes will be released in 2021<\/strong>, probably in autumn or winter towards the end of the year.<\/p>\n \u201cThe 13th series starts on BBC One later in 2021,\u201d the BBC said in a release, with executive producer Matt Strevens adding that fans would see new episodes \u201clater this year\u201d.<\/p>\n There will be only eight episodes in series 13, three less than usual, in a move that allows the show to stick to its usual production cycle despite complicated new health and safety guidelines.<\/p>\n More recently, it\u2019s been suggested that at least some of the episodes will air in 2022, possibly two specials, which could mean fans will see just six episodes onscreen this year.<\/p>\n \u201cAs ever bosses are staying tight-lipped about what they have planned \u2013 but with filming still going on they clearly have plans for episodes to be playing out much later into 2022, so there\u2019s lots more to come for Jodie\u2019s Doctor,\u201d a BBC insider told RadioTimes.com<\/strong>.<\/p>\n There is! Revealed during Comic-Con@Home in July 2021, the first-look teaser is only 43 seconds long but is packed full of action, intriguing mysteries (what IS the Doctor hiding from Yaz) and shots of John Bishop falling down various holes. What more could you ask for?<\/p>\n Check out the full trailer above, and get excited.<\/p>\n UK tabloid newspaper The Daily Mirror<\/a> has reported that Whittaker is set to hand in her sonic screwdriver at the close of the new series, following a tradition of Doctors leaving after around three seasons in the role.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s all very hush-hush but it is known on set that Jodie is leaving and they are gearing up for a regeneration,\u201d an insider reportedly said.<\/p>\n \u201cHer departure is top secret but at some point over the coming months the arrival of the 14th Doctor will need to be filmed. It\u2019s very exciting.\u201d<\/p>\n But is this story actually true? Well, it\u2019s hard to say. When contacted by RadioTimes.com<\/strong> the BBC neither confirmed nor denied the report, instead declining to comment.<\/p>\n While John Barrowman made a major comeback for Revolution of the Daleks, he apparently won\u2019t be back for the next series.<\/p>\n \u201cListen, I don\u2019t think I\u2019m saying anything out of line \u2013 I\u2019m not in the next series. I don\u2019t want to tease the fans,\u201d he told TV Choice Magazine.<\/p>\n Still, it\u2019s possible Barrowman (who managed to keep Jack\u2019s involvement a secret for many months) is pulling our leg again and, even if he isn\u2019t, it may not be long before Captain Jack is back anyway.<\/p>\n \u201cI mean if they ever ask Jack back I\u2019ll come back at the drop of a hat,\u201d Barrowman previously told RadioTimes.com<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n However, any possibility of a Barrowman return has been made less likely by recent controversy, following accusations that the actor had frequently exposed himself on the sets of Torchwood and Doctor Who in the past.<\/p>\n The allegations came to light after a 2014 video featuring his Doctor Who<\/a>\u00a0co-star Noel Clarke resurfaced. In the clip,\u00a0Clarke, who has been accused of sexual harassment on the set of Doctor Who<\/a>\u00a0and denies the allegations, said Barrowman would expose himself on the production.<\/p>\n Barrowman addressed allegations in a statement released to The Guardian, saying that his \u201chigh-spirited behaviour\u201d was \u201conly ever intended in good humour to entertain colleagues on set and backstage\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n He added: \u201cWith the benefit of hindsight, I understand that upset may have been caused by my exuberant behaviour and I have apologised for this previously. Since my apology in November 2008, my understanding and behaviour have also changed.\u201d<\/p>\n The star has already been\u00a0removed from interactive adventure\u00a0Doctor Who: Time Fracture<\/a>, in which he was originally set to reprise the role of Captain Jack Harkness in a pre-recorded clip.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, Doctor Who audio producers\u00a0Big Finish announced they would not be moving forward<\/a>\u00a0with the release of the story Torchwood: Absent Friends, in which Barrowman was set to star.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n According to series boss Chris Chibnall, Doctor Who Season 13 looks set to bring back some high profile baddies to face off with the Doctor and her friends.<\/p>\n \u201cYes, more monsters are coming back,\u201d Chibnall told Radio Times<\/strong>.<\/p>\n \u201cThere are ones who\u2019ve appeared over the past 15 years that are deserving of another visit in the next series. In fact, they\u2019re probably formulating their plans as we speak\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n More recently, Jodie Whittaker and Mandip Gill confirmed some \u201cold\u201d monsters would be back, leading to speculation about which baddies they could be referring to.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m excited for our amazing Whovians to see some incredible interactions with old monsters,\u201d Whittaker said during a virtual Comic-Con@Home panel<\/p>\n \u201cBecause that part is so good!\u201d added co-star Mandip Gill.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s so special to work with new monsters that we\u2019re the first people to interact with. And old monsters\u2026there\u2019s one in particular, I\u2019m so excited!\u201d<\/p>\n We may already have a few clues about who to expect. Leaked filming photos appear to show the clone-warrior Sontarans (last seen regularly during the Matt Smith era of Doctor Who) sporting a new look for one episode, while another photo apparently showed a deadly Weeping Angel advancing on some victims.<\/p>\n Currently, neither of these monster appearances have been officially confirmed by the BBC, and it\u2019s certainly possible the Weeping Angels were being filmed for a different project \u2013 but, if true, we certainly sound like we\u2019re in for some seriously spooky episodes.<\/p>\n And after a little cameo for a Weeping Angel in New Year\u2019s special Revolution of the Daleks, we\u2019d say chances aren\u2019t looking too remote for their grand return.<\/p>\n Speaking of the Daleks, it looks like the iconic baddies will be back once again after taking centre stage in the 2020 festive special, at least based on some leaked photos from the set.<\/p>\n Jodie Whittaker, Mandip Gill and John Bishop were all spotted filming in Bristol in early June \u2013 as was long-term voice of the Daleks Nicholas Briggs and Dalek operators Nicholas Pegg and Barnaby Edwards. Our conversations started with John even before the pandemic hit. The character of Dan was built for him, and it\u2019s a joy to have him aboard the TARDIS.\u201d<\/p>\n So far, we don\u2019t know much about Dan apart from the fact that he appears to be a painter-decorator, though the BBC did offer a few clues.<\/p>\n \u201cAs he becomes embroiled in the Doctor\u2019s adventures, Dan will quickly learn there\u2019s more to the Universe(s) than he could ever believe,\u201d the channel said in a release.<\/p>\n \u201cTravelling through Space and Time alongside the Doctor and Yaz, he\u2019ll face evil alien races beyond his wildest nightmares.\u201d<\/p>\n And more recently, in an online Q&A Bishop gave some more details about how his character is introduced to Doctor Who.<\/p>\n A post shared by LMA (@lmauniofficial)<\/a><\/p><\/div><\/blockquote> \u201cChris Chibnall, who is the showrunner and the main writer of\u00a0Doctor Who and the Broadchurch showrunner, has got a fantastic pedigree,\u201d Bishop told students of the Liverpool Media Academy.<\/p>\n \u201cHe wants to base it in Liverpool because the series always begins from somewhere, the last one from Sheffield. And so he wanted it to be based in Liverpool and that\u2019s where the Doctor is going to get the new companion.\u201d<\/p>\n It also appears we\u2019ll meet Dan\u2019s parents in his first episode, played by actors Sue Murphy and Paul Broughton.<\/p>\n \u201cI did one thing with two Liverpool actors, Paul Broughton and Sue Murphy,\u201d Bishop said.<\/p>\n \u201cThey were playing my mum and dad and I swear to God, it was like a masterclass because the was a little bit where there\u2019s these aliens that have come down. They took over the world. My mom has found a way to knock them out with a wok.\u201d<\/p>\n He added: \u201cThere\u2019s a scene where we\u2019re in the car with me mum and dad, and what was fantastic for me is they were \u2013 watching them play off each other, watching them acting while the other one was speaking \u2013 because they work so well together anyway, and honestly I\u2019ve just learned loads from that!\u201d<\/p>\n Sounds like we\u2019re in for some more Who family drama when Dan makes his debut.<\/p>\n The COVID-19 pandemic shut down all sorts of TV productions and Doctor Who is among those affected.<\/p>\n It appears that filming on season 13 was delayed by several weeks, but still kicked off at roughly the same time of year as was always intended.<\/p>\n However, due to more complex filming practices necessitated by the health crisis, the upcoming season has had to shorten its run by three episodes to ensure production won\u2019t run over, and is structured as a serialised story<\/a> rather than the usual one-off episodes.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Apart from Bishop, the big new addition to Doctor Who series 13 is Game of Thrones star Jacob Anderson, who will play a mysterious space-traveller called Vinder across several episodes.<\/p>\n \u201cThe Doctor has been a part of my life forever, from watching and rewatching the serials on VHS as a kid and being terrified, to unexpectedly finding my eyes watering when the Tenth Doctor said \u2018I don\u2019t want to go\u2019,\u201d Anderson said.<\/p>\n \u201cI always wanted to live in the Whoniverse. Not only has a lifelong dream of mine now been fulfilled, but to be playing a character as fun, adventurous and dynamic as Vinder is the cherry on top. This is very cool.\u201d<\/p>\n Incumbent Doctor Jodie Whittaker<\/a> has confirmed she\u2019ll be back for season 13, reuniting with Chris Chibnall for a new series of adventures \u2013 though as noted above, it\u2019s not been confirmed whether she\u2019ll stay beyond that.<\/p>\n However companions Tosin Cole and Bradley Walsh will definitely not be back for more, with the pair leaving after the special,<\/a> having booked big new roles in US legal drama 61st Street<\/a> and an ITV remake of The Darling Buds of May<\/a> respectively. Instead, John Bishop\u2019s new character Dan (see above) will take their place at the Doctor\u2019s side.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, Sacha Dhawan<\/a> has said he\u2019s open to returning again as the Doctor\u2019s nemesis, The Master, assuming fans are keen to have him back.<\/p>\n \u201cThere\u2019s been no talk about me coming back,\u201d he told RadioTimes.com<\/strong>. \u201cI know they are planning another series and I\u2019m waiting for that phone call.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cI would really love to come back. I\u2019m just really excited to see, if I do come back, where they\u2019d take the character. The Master is so unpredictable, he can get out of anything! I\u2019m sure he\u2019ll be inclined to make another visit. I hope so!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Towards the end of the series 12 finale there was also a hint that the Master may have escaped another certain death<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cAll of you, through here, now!\u201d he can be heard shouting as the Death Particle activates, suggesting that he may have shepherded his new Cyber-Army into a waiting TARDIS and escaped from Gallifrey.<\/p>\n \u201cT<\/span>he thing is\u2026 what I love about the Master is that you can put him in the darkest, most dangerous, most impossible situations\u2026 and he\u2019ll always find a way of getting out of them. How, I don\u2019t know!\u201d Dhawan told RadioTimes.com.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n If Whittaker is<\/em> leaving, it seems increasingly likely that Dhawan\u2019s Master could return for one last face-off \u2013 and the same logic would suggest that Jo Martin\u2019s mysterious Fugitive Doctor would turn up to resolve her storyline as well.<\/p>\n And indeed Martin has herself gone on record to state that she hopes to return to the show<\/a> \u2013 or perhaps even be given her own spin-off series.<\/p>\n \u201cOf course, of course,\u201d Martin said, when asked by RadioTimes.com<\/strong> if she\u2019d like to reprise her role.<\/p>\n \u201cWhat\u2019s not to like about that? I would absolutely love it. And they\u2019ve got John Bishop there now, haven\u2019t they? I\u2019m a big fan of his. I want a scene with him.\u201d<\/p>\n She added: \u201cI think there\u2019s so much more story. What they set up opens up a world that we\u2019ve not fully explored within Doctor Who yet.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd you don\u2019t want to waste that costume. You know what I mean? That costume \u2013 it\u2019s a real waste of a costume because it\u2019s so swaggy, as they say. So I think that costume needs to get worn again by me.\u201d<\/p>\n Of course, given the high profile return of John Barrowman last series and again in the festive special, viewers will be wondering if any other fan favourites from years gone by will be returning to the show.<\/p>\n Donna Noble had been mooted for a return by some fans after Catherine Tate was allegedly spotted in Liverpool while a shoot was taking place, however those claims were denied by her representative.<\/p>\n Some other former stars have also revealed they\u2019d love to return, with both Osgood star Ingrid Oliver and River Song actress Alex Kingston claiming they\u2019d love to team up with Jodie Whittaker before her time in the TARDIS is up.<\/p>\n Oliver told RadioTimes.com<\/strong>,\u00a0\u201cJodie\u2019s Doctor is so funny and witty and high energy\u201d and said\u00a0she would love to see how Osgood would interact with her<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cI think it\u2019d be quite funny,\u201d she said. \u201cI think it\u2019d be a really funny dynamic, actually, and quite interesting to watch. Let\u2019s see what happens. I mean, let\u2019s do it. Let\u2019s do it!\u201d<\/p>\n Meanwhile, Kingston told RadioTimes.com<\/strong> it would be a \u201cgreat shame\u201d if River Song never met Jodie Whittaker\u2019s Doctor<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cIt would be a great shame if it were not to happen. Let\u2019s put it that way,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m open to anything. I don\u2019t have an idea about how we should meet or anything like that. But I would like River to meet her, and plant a big, fat kiss on her!\u201d<\/p>\n Plot details of the yet-to-be-filmed series 13 remain unknown, though Chibnall has revealed that clues about what to expect are present in the series 12 finale<\/a> if you know where to find them \u2013 and apparently the plan for the next series is \u201cbig\u201d and \u201cambitious.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWe are already planning the stories,\u201d Chibnall said.\u00a0\u201cYou\u2019ll realise there are some stories we\u2019re already setting in train for next series. We have very big, ambitious plans for our third series together.\u201d<\/p>\n Presumably, if Jodie Whittaker is leaving then the major storyline will be the build-up to the Doctor\u2019s exit, with the Time Lord facing a chilling new threat as she builds to her final adventure.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, rumour has it that the season 13 filming currently underway involves iconic Crimean War nurse Mary Seacole, in keeping with the series\u2019 trend for emotional historical episodes in recent episodes, though this storyline has yet to be confirmed officially.<\/p>\n And of course, certain revelations in the season 12 finale episode The Timeless Children \u2013 namely that the Doctor was a being from another dimension who was harvested by the Time Lords for regeneration<\/a>, and subsequently lived countless lifetimes that were later removed from her mind \u2013 are likely to be picked up in season 13 itself, especially after the Doctor mentions these issues again in 2021 festive special Revolution of the Daleks.<\/p>\n Perhaps, after being urged by Ryan (Tosin Cole) in that episode we\u2019ll see the Doctor investigate her past self and work out what missions she completed for the Division, or where she came from in the first place.<\/p>\n As noted, it also seems likely that we\u2019ll see more from the \u201cnew\u201d incarnation of the Doctor (Jo Martin) introduced in series 12 episode Fugitive of the Judoon, who we\u2019d expect to cross paths with Whittaker once again before the latter leaves the series behind.<\/p>\n Mandip Gill has suggested the series will also see Yaz continuing to deal with her former mental health issues.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s part of Yaz\u2019s journey now,\u201d she said. \u201cIt will affect, basically, her choices in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n All that, plus the introduction of Bishop\u2019s new character Dan, are sure to make for a busy season. Plus, Chris Chibnall offered one clue during a virtual panel about the series: the word \u201cswarm.\u201d Hmmm\u2026.any guesses?<\/p>\n Series showrunner Chris Chibnall has confirmed he\u2019ll be back in charge for Jodie Whittaker\u2019s third series, following earlier rumours that he might leave the sci-fi drama behind.<\/p>\n \u201cI do know I\u2019m coming back for a third season,\u201d Chibnall said. \u201cYeah, absolutely.\u201d<\/p>\n It\u2019s currently unknown whether other series 12 writers like Vinay Patel, Pete McTighe, Ed Hime, Maxine Alderton, Charlene James or Nina Metivier will also return, or whether series 11\u2019s Malorie Blackman and Joy Wilkinson could make a comeback.<\/p>\n Doctor Who is available to stream on BBC iPlayer and Netflix.
