Just as Pok\u00e9mon are assigned a type, each of their moves also has an assigned type \u2013 for instance, Cyndaquil, one of the three starter Pok\u00e9mon in Pok\u00e9mon Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold, SoulSilver and Arceus, is a Fire-type Pokemon but its move Rollout is a Rock-type move.<\/p>\n
Moves that are effective against your opposing Pok\u00e9mon\u2019s type will result in increased damage, while using a move that isn\u2019t as effective against the same Pok\u00e9mon will inflict decreased damage. The same goes for attacks made against your own Pok\u00e9mon by an opponent, for instance, if you choose a Fire-type Pok\u00e9mon to battle against a Water-type you\u2019re likely to watch your Pok\u00e9mon faint.<\/p>\n
But how does this translate in practice? Well, it\u2019s all down to maths.<\/p>\n
A single-type advantage such as a Fire-type attack against a Grass-type Pok\u00e9mon will give you double the normal damage.<\/p>\n
However, a double-type advantage, such as Fire-type attack against a Grass AND Bug-type Pok\u00e9mon will let you inflict an impressive four times the normal damage on your opponent.<\/p>\n
If a Pok\u00e9mon resists a certain type (such as a Fire-type attack on a Water-type Pok\u00e9mon), you\u2019ll inflict just half the normal damage and you\u2019ll receive the dreaded message \u2018it\u2019s not very effective\u2019 following your attack.<\/p>\n
The same applies to a double-type disadvantage \u2013 if you use a Fire-type attack on a Water AND Rock-type Pok\u00e9mon you\u2019ll inflict a measly quarter of the normal damage.<\/p>\n
Another type strategy you can take advantage of is STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus) \u2013 as the name suggests, if you use a move from a Pok\u00e9mon that matches its type (for example a Fire-type Pok\u00e9mon using a Fire-type move) you can achieve 1.5 times the normal damage.<\/p>\n
Add that to your double-type advantage method, i.e. a Fire-type Pok\u00e9mon using a Fire-type move against Grass\/Bug-type Pok\u00e9mon, and you\u2019ll bag a whopping six times the amount of normal damage.<\/p>\n
