Danny Dyer has explained that he took a break from EastEnders<\/a> to save his life.<\/p>\n

The actor, who plays Mick Carter on the BBC One soap, took a break from the role as the Queen Vic pub landlord in 2017 amid personal troubles.<\/p>\n

Speaking to EastEnders flashback episode star Jaime Winstone<\/a> on her podcast Greatest Night Ever<\/a>, Dyer revealed that his own life was impacting his work so severely that he needed time away.<\/p>\n

Dyer said: \u201cI turned around to the bosses of EastEnders and I said, \u2018Listen, I\u2019ve gotta go somewhere. I\u2019m going to die.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cThey was like, \u2018Oh, OK. Errr, right\u2019. And so I sorted it myself and I paid for it myself.\u201d<\/p>

The actor continued: \u201cFame never suited me. I was always f**king gonna be going down the wrong path. So, I lost the plot for many years and I was a f**king lunatic.\u201d<\/p>\n

Following tabloid reports in 2017 on the reasons behind his departure, an EastEnders spokesperson told Digital Spy<\/a> at the time:\u00a0\u201cDanny is on a short break from EastEnders. This was not enforced by bosses, nor has he quit the show.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dyer made his EastEnders debut in December 2013 and earlier this year it was announced that he would be departing his role as Mick Carter<\/a> after nearly nine years.<\/p>\n

Appearing on BBC Radio 2\u2019s\u00a0The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show<\/a> in March, Dyer told the host: \u201cWe\u2019ve just been pitched my leaving storyline. It\u2019s going to be epic. It\u2019s huge.\u201d<\/p>\n

Prior to Dyer\u2019s exit, his on-screen daughters will have also departed the soap in the form of Maddy Hill as Nancy Carter<\/a> and Rose Ayling-Ellis as Frankie Lewis<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Mick Carter is currently at the centre of a love triangle with his ex-wife Linda (Kellie Bright) and his scheming new partner Janine Butcher (Charlie Brooks).<\/p>\n

On his own podcast with daughter Dani Dyer titled Sorted with the Dyers<\/a>, the actor previously revealed: \u201cThe big news is I\u2019ve decided not to renew my contract.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s all. That\u2019s not because I\u2019ve fallen out with anybody \u2013 I love everybody. That job has been amazing for me.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s an important part of television. I\u2019m grateful for the beautiful years I\u2019ve had there. I\u2019m going to miss the people massively. It\u2019s me taking a risk.\u201d<\/p>\n
