\u201cWe\u2019re back to being big and scope-y,\u201d she said. \u201cThere\u2019s going to be a feeling that things are just ripping along for the first block. Final Season exclusively streaming August 23 on Disney+ pic.twitter.com\/9B3tKQX2tO<\/a><\/p>\u2014 Disney+ UK (@DisneyPlusUK) July 23, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote> Production got underway on season 11\u2019s bumper crop of episodes in February 2021, with producer Kevin Deiboldt sharing that \u201cwe truly hope it\u2019s worth the wait\u201d.<\/p>\n The season is set to be epic in length, with 24 episodes split into two separate batches bringing the story to a close, the second of which is likely to be held until 2022.<\/p>\n In the meantime, fans have enjoyed some extra season 10 episodes<\/a>, which aired in the UK from early March until Easter Monday.<\/p>\n You can expect all of season 10\u2019s main cast to return for The Walking Dead\u2019s final run, including: Norman Reedus as Daryl, Melissa McBridge as Carol, Christian Serratos as Rosita, Josh McDermitt as Eugene, Seth Gilliam as Father Gabriel, Ross Marquand as Aaron, Khary Payton as Ezekiel, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Negan.<\/p>\n It\u2019s also likely that Lauren Cohan will play a major part as Maggie Rhee after she returned in dramatic fashion in the season 10 finale two years after leaving the show.<\/p>\n And there have even been some rumours that Andrew Lincoln could return as Rick Grimes, with Reedus saying that he\u2019s tried to convince his former co-star to return for the final season.<\/p>\n Fans have speculated that Lennie James could return as Morgan<\/a> also \u2013 especially as the character had such a key role in the show\u2019s very first episode.<\/p>\n \u201cThere are a few people that I\u2019ll be very surprised if they don\u2019t show up in some shape or form,\u201d James told RadioTimes.com<\/span><\/a>. \u201cBut you know, at the moment, it\u2019s all up for grabs.\u201d<\/p>\n Meanwhile, Michael James Shaw has been confirmed to be playing Mercer in season 11, a character introduced towards the end of the comic book series who nevertheless made a big impression on fans.<\/p>\n Jeffrey Dean Morgan\u2019s son will also appear in the fifth episode of season 11 \u2013 as a zombie no less.<\/p>\n On The Late Late Show with James Corden,\u00a0<\/em>Morgan said: \u201cGus Morgan, my 11-year-old son, is going to be the featured walker in episode five. He\u2019s been getting his COVID test so he can be on set and all that. The Walking Dead lives.\u201d<\/p>\n The news that the long-running show would be wrapping up came as a surprise to fans and star Jeffrey Dean Morgan has revealed that there was a similar feeling behind-the-scenes.<\/p>\n In March 2021, the Negan actor told Collider<\/a>\u00a0that there had been no initial intention to end the show here and that even showrunner Angela Kang was blindsided by the decision.<\/p>\n He said: \u201cThe news, when we got it in the middle of the pandemic, was a complete surprise, not only to me and the rest of the actors, but to everybody involved in the show from production.<\/p>\n \u201cScott Gimple and Angela Kang had no idea either. It came from nowhere and there was such a huge pivot. I think they had Season 11 all mapped out, where they were going to go, and suddenly it became, \u2018We also have to close the story, in a way.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n When the announcement was made revealing that the 11th season would be the last, a further two spin-off shows were announced, joining the pre-existing Fear the Walking Dead<\/a> and The Walking Dead: World Beyond<\/a>, while a series of Rick Grimes spin-off movies<\/a> are also in the pipeline.<\/p>\n It appears that some plot threads will be picked up in subsequent spin-off shows, with a potential Daryl and Carol<\/a> series being teased for 2023, with Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride reprising their roles.<\/p>\n \u201cI think it\u2019s great that people are getting excited and have something to look forward to,\u201d actress Melissa McBride said. \u201cDaryl and Carol do have a lot of fans out there, [who] had even talked about how fun it would be to see them have a spin-off. I\u2019m excited!\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cAll these characters have gotten to the point where they can deal with, and sometimes not deal with, each other in our small group,\u201d Reedus added. \u201cWhen you take these two characters and put them on the road and they go see who\u2019s left out in the world, how do you \u2026 it\u2019s like coming out of prison, sort of. You kind of have to re-adapt to people.\u201d<\/p>\n Meanwhile, Lauren Cohan, who plays Maggie in the series, told Entertainment Weekly<\/a> that there are also \u201cmurmurings\u201d of a potential series focusing on her character.<\/p>\n Most recently, Jeffrey Dean Morgan has revealed that he has had conversations about a yet-t0-be-confirmed spin-off revolving around the popular villain-turned-antihero Negan.<\/p>\n The character took on a more sympathetic light in the recent season 10c episode that explored his tragic origin, which could be carried forward in a solo outing.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s definitely being talked about,\u201d Morgan said, while appearing as a guest on Conan O\u2019Brien\u2019s talk show. \u201cI think they\u2019re thinking of a couple different ideas, but I\u2019ve definitely had conversations about possibly continuing the story of Negan.\u201d<\/p>\n With 24 episodes ahead, it seems likely that the final season isn\u2019t exactly going to be light on action and drama.<\/p>\n In June 2021, US broadcaster AMC released an official synopsis for The Walking Dead\u2019s final season, which reads: \u201cAlexandria is severely compromised, left a former shell of the home it once was from the carnage and devastation left behind by the Whisperers.<\/p>\n \u201cNow all who live in Alexandria struggle to refortify it and feed its increasing number of residents, which include the survivors from the fall of the Kingdom and the burning of Hilltop; along with Maggie and her new group, the Wardens.<\/p>\n \u201cAlexandria has more people than it can manage to feed and protect. Their situation is dire as tensions heat up over past events and self-preservation rises to the surface within the ravaged walls.<\/p>\n The synopsis continues: \u201cThey must secure more food while they attempt to restore Alexandria before it collapses like countless other communities they have come across throughout the years. But where and how?<\/p>\n \u201cMore haggard and hungrier than ever before, they must dig deeper to find the effort and strength to safeguard the lives of their children, even if it means losing their own.<\/p>\n \u201cMeanwhile, unbeknownst to those at Alexandria, Eugene, Ezekiel, Yumiko, and Princess are still being held captive by mysterious soldiers who are members of a larger and unforthcoming group.\u201d<\/p>\n Previously, showrunner Angela Kang told attendees of New York Comic-Con\u2019s virtual The Walking Dead panel<\/a> that the producers have been forced to \u201cthink outside the box\u201d when it comes to working around COVID restrictions.<\/p>\n \u201cWe can\u2019t have 300 zombie extras and people [with] faces smashed together, with mouths all over the place,\u201d she said. \u201cBut, the thing that\u2019s been really cool is we\u2019ve had to think outside the box. Like, how to make things still feel really scary and really cool and really emotional, while being a little more cognisant of, like, how many people are in a scene.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cLike, are there ways to do this where people are not constantly in each other\u2019s faces? Hopefully, when the audience watches it, they won\u2019t really feel the things we\u2019re doing.\u201d<\/p>\n She added that they\u2019ll be diving \u201creally deeply into these really cool character stories\u201d in the upcoming episodes, but wouldn\u2019t give away any clues to which characters they might be.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019ve got definitely a story that a lot of comic book fans have been waiting for for a very long time, and I love this script. So, you know, we\u2019ll get to tease things in a different way. There are limitations but I think it\u2019s also been a really cool creative challenge at the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n When season 11 does come around, we\u2019re bound to see some friction between Maggie (Lauren Cohan), who returned to the show for the season 10 finale, and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), who killed her husband Glenn back in season seven.<\/p>\n Speaking to Entertainment Weekly<\/a>, Cohan revealed: \u201cI haven\u2019t been privy to these saving graces of Negan\u2019s or his great relationship with kids or his affinity for animals. I don\u2019t know any of this. And even if I did\u2026 So, it\u2019s going to be a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n She added: \u201cIt\u2019s definitely going to be a lot when she comes back. I\u2019m so jonesing to get into it. It\u2019s really, it\u2019s fricking great. And I couldn\u2019t be doing it with anybody more fun than Jeffrey [Dean Morgan]. It\u2019s just, we\u2019re really amped.
