The show\u2019s creator and star Quinta Brunson has teased what\u2019s to come in the upcoming season, with the Emmy winner revealing that we\u2019ll get to go home with Abbott\u2019s teachers.<\/p>\n
Speaking to RadioTimes.com<\/a> in an exclusive interview, Brunson said that viewers can expect a \u201cvery exciting guest cast\u201d for season 2.<\/p>\n \u201cI think at Abbott, we don\u2019t like to do stunt casting. We like to cast in people that we find interesting and that we find funny to fit into this world \u2013 same way we did with the first season,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n \u201cTo me, Zack Fox, who plays Tariq, was so exciting,\u201d she added. \u201cTo get him and have him on my show, he\u2019s someone who is a very good friend of mine but also he\u2019s a very exciting comedic presence. I was honoured to be able to have him on my show.<\/p>\n \u201cSame thing with Orlando Jones, who played Tyler\u2019s dad \u2013 that was so cool to be able to get him. This year, I think more of that. I think if anything people can expect obscure guest stars from Abbott.\u201d<\/p>\n Brunson went on to say that in the upcoming season, the characters will be out of the school \u201ca little bit more\u201d than they were in the first season.<\/p>\n \u201cI wanted us to stay in the school as much as possible, because I think workplace comedy should take place in the workplace and that\u2019s how you get the people, the audience, to fall in love with the characters, to fall in love with the school. It\u2019s important.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd so, now in this season, while we\u2019re still going to be in school every day, there are going to be just more opportunities to leave the school, go to characters\u2019 houses, see what their life is like outside the school a little bit,\u201d she added. \u201cI\u2019m just super pumped about that. That\u2019s exciting to write.\u201d<\/p> Abbott Elementary, which airs on ABC in the US and Disney Plus<\/a> in the UK, follows Janine Teagues (Brunson) and other teachers at Philadelphia\u2019s William R Abbott Elementary School as they try to educate their students whilst dealing with serious underfunding problems.<\/p>\n Sheryl Lee Ralph, who plays experienced kindergarten teacher Barbara Howard, won an Emmy for Outstanding Support Actress in a Comedy Series \u2013 and while Brunson wanted the world to see how \u201cdynamic\u201d Ralph is, she revealed that when casting, she originally assumed Ralph would not be available for the role.<\/p>\n \u201cSheryl was an interesting case, because I just assumed [she] was not available,\u201d she told RadioTimes.com<\/strong>. \u201cI just assumed she was not an option. So when I found out she was an option during our Barbara search, I was like, \u2018We\u2019ve got to get a read from her.\u2019<\/p>\n \u201cAnd you know, Sheryl is in reality offer-only, but I called her and I was like, \u2018I really do need a read for this because it\u2019s mockumentary and I have to see.\u2019 I think mockumentary is a special one where offer-only does not apply.<\/p>\n \u201cYou have to communicate with the actor and tell them what they\u2019re about to do. So anyway, she read it and it was like okay, she\u2019s it.
