June\u2019s war on Gilead resumes!<\/p>\n

The fifth season of The Handmaid\u2019s Tale<\/a> has kicked off in the US, following June (Moss) as she faces up to the consequences of her involvement in the murder of Commander Waterford (Joseph Fiennes) last season.<\/p>\n

Moss appeared on stage at the season 5 premiere at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival and spoke about her role.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cI always wondered if [directing] would distract me from the performance and from acting and I happily discovered that it deepened my understanding of June,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cNormally, to be honest, when I am just acting, I don\u2019t pay much attention. I don\u2019t do any of the thought that you\u2019re supposed to do,\u201d she added. \u201cBut when you\u2019re a director, you have to think about it, you have to talk to the writers and actors, so I found I did a lot more work as an actor being a director.\u201d<\/p>\n

Actress Yvonne Strahovski, who plays Serena Joy, also appeared on stage, teasing the feud between her character and June in season 5 following the death of Commander Waterford last season.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are so many juicy things to do with this character. This is an exciting set-up for this season,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

She added: \u201cBut I would say don\u2019t let it fool you, because we really had an opportunity to really truly explore, dare I say it, the \u2018Juliet and Juliet\u2019 love affair that is the June and Serena relationship this year, [with] new heights and depths.\u201d<\/p>\n

One key character who sadly won\u2019t be returning in season 5 is Alexis Bledel\u2019s Emily Malek.<\/p>\n

The actress issued a statement to\u00a0Entertainment Weekly<\/a>\u00a0earlier in 2022 that read: \u201cAfter much thought, I felt I had to step away from\u00a0The Handmaid\u2019s Tale\u00a0at this time. I am forever grateful to Bruce Miller for writing such truthful and resonant scenes for Emily, and to Hulu, MGM, the cast and crew for their support.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, there\u2019s still a slight possibility that Emily could come back for\u00a0Handmaid\u2019s\u00a0<\/a>sixth and final season<\/a>. \u201cThat character was not at the end of her journey as far as we were concerned,\u201d Miller previously told ET.<\/p>\n

Regarding her potential comeback in season 6, he said the team was \u201cmindful\u201d to \u201c[leave] that door open.\u201d<\/p>\n
