David Tennant is reunited with writer Steven Moffat for new four-part drama Inside Man<\/a> \u2013 but the Doctor Who<\/a> star almost missed out on the role of vicar Harry Watling.<\/p>\n

Moffat revealed to RadioTimes.com<\/a> that Tennant was his \u201cfirst choice\u201d for the part, but that the actor\u2019s lack of availability initially ruled him out.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce I\u2019d written the first couple, or maybe just the first one, and shown it to Sue [Vertue, producer], we both agreed that it\u2019d be a perfect part for David Tennant, and we know David really well because we hang out with David and Georgia [Tennant] quite often, and obviously I\u2019d worked with him before. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe just thought he\u2019d be perfect, but he wasn\u2019t at all available. His entire schedule was booked up, largely with theatre.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

It was only after they had \u201cgone around the houses looking for a Harry\u201d that the COVID-19 pandemic began, shuttering theatres. \u201c<\/span>COVID closed the world down for two years and David was suddenly much more available,\u201d Moffat explained.<\/span><\/p>

Though exact plot details are shrouded in secrecy, we do know that Inside Man also follows\u00a0a prisoner on death row (Stanley Tucci) whose life becomes unexpectedly entangled with Tennant\u2019s vicar \u2013 and it was Vertue who suggested Tucci for the role of convicted murderer Jefferson Grieff.<\/p>\n

\u201cSue having read the first two said, \u2018That\u2019s Stanley Tucci, that\u2019s just definitely him, there\u2019s no question, it\u2019s got to be him.\u2019 And other people kept raising other names and she said, \u2018No, it\u2019s Stanley Tucci, it definitely is.’\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
