A four-part drama, Inside Man sees the life of Tucci\u2019s character become unexpectedly entangled with that of a small-town vicar (played by David Tennant), a journalist (Lydia West), and a maths teacher (Dolly Wells).<\/p>\n
Grieff is awaiting execution for murder, solving crimes from behind bars, which Moffat felt gave the character a perspective different to most TV detectives.<\/p>\n
\u201cI<\/span> was thinking of what kind of detectives we hadn\u2019t had,\u201d Moffat \u2013 who co-created and co-wrote four seasons of BBC One\u2019s Sherlock \u2013 explained to RadioTimes.com<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cP<\/span>retty much ever since Doyle invented Sherlock Holmes, there has been no other kind of detective \u2013 they\u2019re all rip-offs of Sherlock Holmes.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cBut [Grieff\u2019s] particular area of insight is he knows that anyone can do it. He\u2019s not supporting his worldview with the fairy tale that supports your worldview and mine, that there\u2019s goodness and kindness and some of us just wouldn\u2019t [commit murder].<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cHe knows \u2013 he\u2019s solving crimes from hell. <\/span>He does believe that every human being is absolutely capable of the abominable \u2013 the advantage of the loss of everything he valued from his life is that he has the insight that strips away all the lies that sustain our illusion of security.\u201d<\/span><\/p> Grieff, like Sherlock, has a sidekick of sorts, though even this concept is turned on its head in Inside Man, with Jefferson\u2019s partner-in-solving-crime \u2013 Dillon Kempton (Atkins Estimond) \u2013 being another death row inmate, a serial killer with no moral conscience.<\/p>\n \u201cDoyle just got so many things right when he did Sherlock Holmes,\u201d Moffat said. \u201cIf you have a detective, you\u2019ve got to have someone to talk to!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Moffat also revealed that David Tennant almost missed out on the role of vicar Harry Watling in Inside Man<\/a>, despite being his \u201cfirst choice\u201d for the part.<\/p>\n Inside Man airs on BBC One and BBC iPlayer<\/a> on Monday 26th September at 9pm.
