Having penned screen adaptations of Sherlock Holmes, Jekyll and Hyde, Dracula<\/a> and The Time Traveler\u2019s Wife<\/a>, Steven Moffat\u2019s latest project is his first purely original creation in over 20 years: BBC One thriller Inside Man<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The four-part drama follows a small-town vicar (played by David Tennant), a death row inmate (Stanley Tucci), a teacher (Dolly Wells) and a journalist (Lydia West) as their lives are surprisingly and inexorably drawn together.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wrote the first episode just on spec,\u201d Moffat told RadioTimes.com.<\/span> \u201cI didn\u2019t even pitch it to Sue [Vertue, TV producer and Moffat\u2019s wife], I just wrote it while <\/span>we were doing Dracula to pass the time on set, bored at the monitors, frankly.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Though it\u2019s his first project not based on any existing source material since 2000\u2019s Coupling<\/a>, it was never Moffat\u2019s plan to become a serial adapter. \u201cIt was certainly not an intention of mine to do that, at all. I never really think of myself as someone who adapts things \u2013 but yeah, I think it is my first absolute original [since then].<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI mean, I never know if that means anything at all. It would be ridiculous to suggest that it somehow limits your creativity if you\u2019ve got to write a Doctor Who<\/a>. Jesus Christ, it doesn\u2019t! I mean, f**king hell\u2026 that\u2019s a monster. So the fact that you exist sometimes within existing frameworks is not taking a day off \u2013 it really, really isn\u2019t. No one who thinks that has ever tried to write the bloody Doctor!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
