The six-part series follows the titular Ralph, played by Leon Harrop, and Katie, played by Sarah Gordy, as they navigate married life after their wedding at the end of The A Word season 3.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s described as a comedy drama which sees the couple face the challenges every newlywed faces, with the added fact that they have Down\u2019s Syndrome.<\/p>\n
As Harrop and Gordy step into the spotlight in their own series, the two stars spoke with Radio Times magazine<\/strong> about filming in the Lake District, getting recognised for their roles and reuniting with old friends.<\/p>\n You can find the full Q&A interview below.<\/p> How does it feel to be promoted to stars of your own show?<\/strong><\/p>\n Sarah<\/strong>: \u201cI jumped for joy and was in tears when I heard, I couldn\u2019t believe it. Leon\u2019s made me laugh since I first met him, and I\u2019m happy to work with the producer Jules Hussey, who I\u2019ve worked with since Call the Midwife.\u201d<\/p>\n Leon<\/strong>: \u201cWhen Peter told me, I went absolutely wild! I jumped around, screaming. I thought it was a prank and asked him to repeat it. There\u2019s never been a show with two main characters like us, and that\u2019s brilliant. Plus I\u2019m happy, because I get to do lots just with Sarah.\u201d<\/p>\n Has it been hard work?<\/strong><\/p>\n Leon<\/strong>: \u201cIt is if other actors go off script! And I had three days off during filming. Sarah had two.\u201d<\/p>\n Sarah<\/strong>: \u201cFilming outdoors in the Lakes has been hard at times. I get really cold really easily and my fingers turn blue and black. And apart from Mothers Day, I had 12 weeks without my mum, the first time I\u2019ve been away from her for that long.\u201d<\/p>\n What\u2019s it been like working with your coach, Jess?<\/strong><\/p>\n Sarah<\/strong>: \u201cShe has a method of teaching us how to breathe first, and then say the lines. I stumble a lot and I have to ask her to help me take it slowly. Having Jess at my side, I have a friend for life.\u201d<\/p>\n Leon<\/strong>: \u201cIf I get a chunk of words all together, I struggle a bit to get them out. Jess tells me what the words mean, and I break them down, one by one. I stop there, get it in my head and then we do the full lines together.\u201d<\/p>\n How do you feel about having fans and getting recognised in the street? Now you\u2019re the stars, that will only increase.<\/strong><\/p>\n Leon<\/strong>: \u201cIt\u2019s weird having people looking at me, or coming up to say, \u2018Are you Ralph? Nice to meet you\u2019. But when fans ask for an autograph or a photo, I\u2019m not the kind of person to say no. I say yes to everything.\u201d<\/p>\n Sarah<\/strong>: \u201cI have a video message from someone who\u2019s blind, who lives my area. She asked if I was going to be on television again. When I told her I was doing an A Word spin-off, she said, \u2018excellent, I\u2019ve got to see this!’\u201d<\/p>\n How did you find acting opposite Craig Cash, who plays Ralph and Katie\u2019s neighbour?<\/strong><\/p>\n Leon<\/strong>: \u201cWhen I found out I was acting with Craig Cash, I went, \u2018I want Chris [Eccleston] back, please\u2019. When I met Craig on set, I asked him, \u2018Are you good with comedy?\u2019 He said, \u2018Yeah, I\u2019m brilliant\u2019. So when I did a scene with him, I said, \u2018Right, let\u2019s do it with comedy\u2019. It worked \u2013 it was like having Chris beside me.\u201d<\/p>\n Sarah<\/strong>: \u201cThey\u2019re very different. Chris is very quick, Craig is slow. It\u2019s a sign of how good an actor you are, Leon, that you adapted to their different styles.\u201d<\/p>\n Leon<\/strong>: \u201cI like Chris and I like Craig. They are different, but they\u2019ve both got comedy bones.\u201d<\/p>\n Leon, how did you feel to be reunited with Pooky Quesnel, who plays Ralph\u2019s mum?<\/strong><\/p>\n Leon<\/strong>: \u201cPooky is so nice, happy and joyful. Sometimes when I get something wrong, she\u2019ll jump in, say a line for me, stop, and then repeat it. We have an unbelievable relationship \u2013 it feels like working with my mum.
