ITV\u2019s latest detective drama Karen Pirie<\/a> is still airing weekly, but with all episodes now available on ITV Hub, those viewers who have binged their way through them are already itching for more.<\/p>\n

The series follows Karen, a \u201cyoung and fearless Scottish investigator with a quick mouth and tenacious desire for the truth\u201d based in Fife.<\/p>\n

The show is based on a series of novels by Val McDermid, meaning there\u2019s still plenty of source material for the team to work from when devising new episodes.<\/p>\n

Now, with her first case done and dusted after season 1, can we expect to see more from the young detective? Read on for everything you need to know about Karen Pirie season 2.<\/p>\n

Karen Pirie hasn\u2019t been renewed for season 2 just yet, but executive producer Simon Heath said that he and the team all \u201chave our fingers firmly crossed\u201d<\/a>. He said that it will \u201cultimately depend on how well the audience respond to the first season\u201d, a sentiment echoed by the show\u2019s screenwriter Emer Kenny.<\/p>\n

Kenny said in an exclusive interview with RadioTimes.com<\/a> that she was \u201creally keen to see what people respond to\u201d in the first season in order to find out \u201cwhat they like about\u201d it and then \u201ckind of roll with that after it comes out\u201d.<\/p>\n

As season 1 has only just debuted on ITV, there\u2019s still plenty of time for an official announcement regarding season 2 to be made. We\u2019ll keep this page updated as and when we have any further information.<\/p>\n

Karen Pirie season 2 would likely focus on the second novel in Val McDermid\u2019s book series, which is titled A Darker Domain<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The book\u2019s blurb says: \u201c25 years ago, a woman and her baby son were kidnapped and held to ransom. Catriona Grant ended up dead and little Adam\u2019s fate has remained a mystery ever since. When a new clue is discovered in a deserted Tuscan villa \u2013 along with grisly evidence of a recent murder \u2013 cold case expert DI Karen Pirie is assigned to follow the trail.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s already working a case from the same year. During the Miners\u2019 Strike of 1984, pit worker Mick Prentice vanished. Where did he really go? And is there a link to the Grant mystery? The truth is stranger \u2013 and far darker \u2013 than fiction.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, we perhaps shouldn\u2019t simply assume the second book is where the team would go for season 2. Screenwriter Kenny told RadioTimes.com<\/strong> that while she\u2019s been \u201clooking at A Darker Domain\u201d, she\u2019s actually \u201cbeen looking at a couple\u201d of McDermid\u2019s other books, too.<\/p>\n

She continued: \u201cYou really want to make sure what you\u2019re doing feels like you should be making it now, that you\u2019re not just making it because it\u2019s the next book in the series. You\u2019re working out why this should be on TV in 2023 or 2024, whenever it will come out \u2013 so yeah we\u2019ve been looking at them and talking about what will work.\u201d<\/p>\n

If the series does return, we\u2019d certainly expect Lauren Lyle to be back. For herself, Lyle has said she would have \u201csigned off season 2 straight away\u201d<\/a> if she could have, adding: \u201cWe didn\u2019t want to leave the set!\u201d<\/p>\n

She said: \u201cI think there\u2019s a lot more to be done, the books are phenomenal. The next one is partially set in Tuscany, so why would we not want to do that?! But yes, she\u2019s my favourite character I\u2019ve ever played and the one I\u2019ve felt most trusted with. I\u2019ve had a lot of creative control, which is just so cool. I definitely feel we could go again if we are permitted.\u201d<\/p>\n

We\u2019d also expect Chris Jenks to be back as DC Jason Murray, while Zach Wyatt has said he\u2019d also like to return, as his character Phil \u201ccertainly has a lot more to offer\u201d. We\u2019d also expect that the show\u2019s writer Kenny would pop up again as Karen\u2019s friend River.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s also not out of the realms of possibility that Rakhee Thakrar could be back as Bel, although that does seem less likely.<\/p>\n
