The husband-and-wife stars of John and Lisa\u2019s Weekend Kitchen, John Torode and Lisa Faulkner, open up about their budget recipes, cooking for their kids and the one show they have to watch.<\/p>\n
What\u2019s your TV-watching set-up?<\/strong><\/p>\n Lisa:<\/strong> We have a sofa each. I\u2019m in one corner on one and John\u2019s on the other. If the kids are there, I\u2019m on the end. Nobody moves John.<\/p>\n Is there anything you\u2019ve recently watched together?<\/strong><\/p>\n John:<\/strong> I liked The Midwich Cuckoos<\/a>, with Max Beasley and Keeley Hawes.<\/p>\n Lisa:<\/strong> [to John] Oh, you did like it.<\/p>\n John:<\/strong> I don\u2019t really watch TV.<\/p>\n Lisa:<\/strong> John sits there and plays Patience.<\/p>\n John:<\/strong> Or Scrabble.<\/p>\n Lisa:<\/strong> Or Scrabble. I binge watch. I\u2019ve just finished Everything I Know About Love<\/a>. I really\u2026<\/p>\n John:<\/strong> [interrupting] I quite like a movie. But I\u2019m not very good with drama. There\u2019s enough drama in the world already.<\/p>\n Lisa:<\/strong> Hard thing his wife\u2019s an actress.<\/p>\n I take it you have the remote, Lisa?<\/strong><\/p>\n Lisa:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n John:<\/strong> I have no real desire to have the remote.<\/p>\n Lisa:<\/strong> One thing we do watch is MasterChef<\/a>, but I\u2019ll say we watch it because I want to.<\/p>\n John:<\/strong> There\u2019s only so much of your own voice you can listen to.<\/p>\n How do you feel about seeing yourselves on screen?<\/strong><\/p>\n Lisa:<\/strong> My acting shows, my things, we haven\u2019t really watched.<\/p>\n John:<\/strong> Everything you\u2019ve ever been in, I\u2019ve watched.<\/p>\n Lisa:<\/strong> Oh, sorry. OK. I don\u2019t sit down to watch them, so I haven\u2019t seen John watch them.<\/p>\n John:<\/strong> But I have to watch MasterChef.<\/p>\n Moving on, what can we expect from the new series of Weekend Kitchen?<\/strong><\/p>\n John:<\/strong> We\u2019re trying to do dishes that are doable and a bit of fun. I\u2019ve learnt a lot from Lisa about what people want to cook at home. A lot of basics, especially for Christmas and New Year, which can be really stressful for people.<\/p>\n Obviously it\u2019s a worrying time with the cost of food spiralling. Have you been conscious about showcasing budget-friendly recipes?<\/strong><\/p>\n Lisa:<\/strong> Absolutely. Our food shop has doubled, and it\u2019s terrifying. We have a couple of showstoppers, but out of 45 recipes, only two or three are expensive. The others are supermarket value.<\/p>\n When it comes to cooking, who takes the reins at home?<\/strong><\/p>\n Lisa:<\/strong> We both cook all the time.<\/p>\n John:<\/strong> It depends on what\u2019s going on and who\u2019s there. And what\u2019s in the fridge.<\/p>\n Tell us an ingredient you think deserves more love.<\/strong><\/p>\n John:<\/strong> Parsley. Or herbs in general.<\/p>\n Lisa:<\/strong> Handfuls of herbs.<\/p>\n John:<\/strong> Not a little bit. Not smatterings. Not \u201ca pinch of\u201d. Massive amounts. Put them in salad. Put them in sauces. They really change everything, and they\u2019re good for you.<\/p>\n How do your kids feel about eating meat?<\/strong><\/p>\n John:<\/strong> They go through phases, but my oldest son is very much flexitarian. He tries to be as plant-based as possible, but he comes to us and is very happy to have a T-bone steak.<\/p>\n Do you ever have to cook separate meals to satisfy everybody\u2019s preferences?<\/strong><\/p>\n Lisa:<\/strong> We try not to.<\/p>\n John:<\/strong> No way in the world. If your children are almost at the age where they look after themselves, ask them to cook everyone dinner using what they like.
