The producers of the James Bond franchise are looking to \u201crefresh\u201d the film series as it enters a new era.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the BFI\u2019s \u2018In conversation: 60 years of James Bond\u2019 event \u2013 part of a series of panels marking six decades of agent 007 on the big screen \u2013 producer Michael G. Wilson said he and co-producer Barbara Broccoli are aware that fans feel a \u201csense of ownership\u201d over the character.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s a fictitious character who\u2019s become part of our culture \u2013 like Sherlock Holmes, or Superman, or any of these characters, they transcend any particular moviemaker or any writer, anything like that,\u201d said Wilson.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThey become property of the nation and there is a sense of ownership about it and people can be outraged if they think James Bond is going off the tracks. For Barbara and I, it\u2019s something we keep in mind \u2013 we want to satisfy the audiences but we need to surprise them and refresh it, so that\u2019s the challenge.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

Broccoli had previously suggested that the hunt for an actor to replace Daniel Craig as Bond<\/a> would not begin in earnest until work was underway on the script for the next 007 film.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere isn\u2019t a script and we can\u2019t come up with one until we decide how we\u2019re going to approach the next film because, really, it\u2019s a reinvention of Bond,\u201d she said back in June.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re reinventing who he is and that takes time. I\u2019d say that filming is at least two years away.\u201d<\/p>\n

When it comes to reflecting changing times however, Wilson suggested at the BFI event that the Bond films should \u201cnot just embrace everything immediately\u201d, arguing that\u00a0<\/span>\u201csometimes things that you think are really important and key are completely out of date 10 years later\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

The movies will, he insisted, continue to draw on Ian Fleming\u2019s original novels, with the author\u2019s \u201crich\u201d storytelling allowing for various interpretations of the stories and character.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you actually read the Bond novels, they\u2019re pretty good literature when you get down to it [and] Bond\u2019s a very complex figure,\u201d Wilson said. \u201cThat\u2019s why it\u2019s lasted so long, because you can pull out of Fleming all kinds of situations and interpretations of Bond, and each one of the actors that\u2019ve played it have taken it on as their own and reinterpreted Fleming but they\u2019ve always found the basis for the character in Fleming, which shows you how rich he was a novelist.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Though it\u2019s yet to be determined who will be the next actor to portray Fleming\u2019s spy<\/a>, Debbie McWilliams \u2013 casting director on the Bond series \u2013 admitted she\u2019s been stunned by some of the names suggested to play 007.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s an extraordinary phenomenon that just about every man on the planet thinks he is James Bond,\u201d she said. \u201cI mean, if you saw my e-mail inbox, you would be astonished at the people who think that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
