James Bond screenwriters Neal Purvis and Robert Wade have revealed that the villain\u2019s lair from No Time to Die<\/a> almost featured in a much earlier 007 film.<\/p>\n

Daniel Craig\u2019s last outing as Bond saw antagonist Safin (Rami Malek) operate from a HQ in the sea of Japan which featured a garden populated by poisonous plants.<\/p>\n

The setting for the film\u2019s final act was inspired by Ian Fleming\u2019s novel You Only Live Twice<\/a>, in which Blofeld possesses his own \u201cGarden of Death\u201d \u2013 with Bond producer Michael G. Wilson revealing at a recent BFI event that this idea \u201chas been in every one of their [Purvis and Wade\u2019s] scripts at some point\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIn the novel, Blofeld lives in this castle with a poison garden in Japan, on an island,\u201d Wade \u2013 who along with Purvis has co-written every 007 movie since 1999\u2019s The World Is Not Enough \u2013 related at the BFI\u2019s \u2018In conversation: 60 years of James Bond\u2019 event.<\/span><\/p>

\u201c[It\u2019s] that thing of always using Ian Fleming as a touchstone[\u2026] \u2013 we really wanted to get that in there and we did literally write it into several scripts.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt was in Die Another Day at one point,\u201d said Purvis, referring to Pierce Brosnan\u2019s 2002 swan song as Bond. \u201c<\/span>We always wanted to use it but what was good about this [No Time to Die] is this is actually about poisons, so it was relevant.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the most recent Bond outing, villain Safin was born to a family of chemists who supplied poisons to criminal organisation SPECTRE.<\/p>\n

Wade also briefly addressed No Time to Die\u2019s divisive ending<\/a>, which saw \u2013 spoiler alert<\/strong> \u2013 Bond succeed in thwarting Safin\u2019s plot but fail to escape his HQ before a missile strike from HMS Dragon obliterates the island.<\/p>\n

Given Bond\u2019s allegiance to the Royal Navy, Wade suggested there was an irony in Navy artillery ultimately causing the spy\u2019s demise. \u201cWe\u2019ve been very aware of Bond as as a naval person \u2013 Commander Bond \u2013 and [\u2026] the idea that the Navy kills James Bond is kind of an interesting way for it all to end,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n
