{"id":23206,"date":"2022-10-05T13:05:08","date_gmt":"2022-10-05T11:05:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/?p=1716476"},"modified":"2022-10-05T13:32:09","modified_gmt":"2022-10-05T11:32:09","slug":"former-doctor-who-boss-steven-moffat-shares-early-weeping-angels-concept","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/radiotimes\/rss_feed\/former-doctor-who-boss-steven-moffat-shares-early-weeping-angels-concept\/","title":{"rendered":"Former Doctor Who boss Steven Moffat shares early Weeping Angels concept"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\"><\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Patrick Cremona\n                \t\t<\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Wednesday, 05 October 2022 at 12:00 am<\/p><hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>More than 15 years on from its original broadcast, Blink remains by far and away one of the scariest episodes from the modern era of <a href=\"\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/doctor-who\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">Doctor Who<\/a> \u2013 responsible for introducing fans to the terrifying Weeping Angels.<\/p>\n<p>And now, Steven Moffat \u2013 who wrote the episode prior to his hugely successful stint as showrunner \u2013 has revealed some early behind-the-scenes details about the monsters\u2019 journey to the screen.<\/p> <p>The writer, whose latest drama <a href=\"\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/tv\/drama\/inside-man-release-date-bbc\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">Inside Man<\/a> has just finished its run on BBC One, took to <a href=\"\/\/twitter.com\/SWmoff\/status\/1577321617377615872&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">Twitter<\/a> to share an email he\u2019d written to producer Julie Gardner dated 5th October 2006.<\/p>\n<p>The email contains an early description of his new monsters as \u201cStatues that come to life when, but only when they\u2019re unobserved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It continues: \u201cSo when we look at them, they look like stone statues \u2013 motionless, weather-beaten stone. They are weeping angels, with folded wings on their backs, and their faces always buried in their hands. But when you look away, their hands drop and they look at you. And maybe do a bit sneaking-up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He then goes on to discuss logistics \u2013 explaining they\u2019ll need \u201cfive or six of them\u201d but adding that \u201cdoubling up shouldn\u2019t be hard\u201d given that they are motionless whenever seen.<\/p>\n<p>And he adds: \u201cThe challenge here will be to make them REALLY look like statues, and not dressed-up people \u2013 which is what they\u2019ll be, obviously.\u00a0 Quite a lot of cunning freeze-framing involved I\u2019d think.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although Moffat claimed that he had \u201cno memory of writing\u201d the email, he said it \u201cmade [him] smile when [he] realised what [he] was talking about.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"&quot;twitter-tweet&quot;\" data-dnt=\"&quot;true&quot;\"><p lang=\"&quot;en&quot;\" dir=\"&quot;ltr&quot;\">Faffing through my old emails, I found this from almost exactly sixteen years ago.
