With just two more episodes of The Rings of Power<\/a> to go, Lord of the Rings fans are bound to be wondering when the TV spin-off will be back for a second season \u2013 and luckily, boss Patrick McKay has teased what to expect from the future of Middle-earth.<\/p>\n

The show\u2019s creator has reflected on what \u201cdidn\u2019t work\u201d in season 1 and teased the \u201cbigger and better\u201d season 2, for which filming began at the start of this month.<\/p>\n

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter<\/a>, McKay candidly shared his thoughts on the first season, adding that the team believes that the episodes improve as the show progresses.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome people had nice things to say about the pilot and second episode, or they didn\u2019t have nice things to say, but I hope they stay for more episodes,\u201d he said. \u201cThe bar has to keep going up.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are things that didn\u2019t work as well in season 1 that might have worked in a smaller show,\u201d he added. \u201cIt has to be about good and evil and the fate of the world or it doesn\u2019t have that epic feeling you want when you\u2019re in Tolkien.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the team admitted that some of the first season\u2019s episodes \u201clack the urgency fans expect from Tolkien adaptations\u201d, with fellow showrunner JD Payne saying: \u201cOne of the big things we learned was even when it\u2019s a small scene, it always has to tie back into the larger stakes.\u201d<\/p>\n

The show won\u2019t shy away from tackling small moments, however, with Payne mentioning the scene in which Sam sees a star through the clouds in 2003\u2019s Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and says that the evil they\u2019re facing is but a passing shadow.<\/p>

\u201cIt\u2019s a tiny personal moment, but it reflects the theme of the entire work,\u201d Payne notes. \u201cAnd even the show\u2019s loudest critics admit the series looks beautiful and does a fine job of creating and appreciating the wonders of Tolkien\u2019s world.\u201d<\/p>\n

The showrunners confirmed to RadioTimes.com<\/a> in an exclusive interview back in September that filming on season 2 was just \u201ca couple of weeks\u201d<\/a> away after the show receeived an early season 2 renewal back in November 2019.<\/p>\n

The show continues on Friday, with episode 7 set to tackle the aftermath of last week\u2019s explosion in the Southlands<\/a>.<\/p>\n
