When he was ultimately caught, he confirmed 29 murders \u2013 but experts believe <span class=\"&quot;searchHighlight&quot;\">the<\/span> number could be closer to 400.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;Body&quot;\"><span lang=\"&quot;EN-US&quot;\">Based on Charles Graeber\u2019s book <span class=\"&quot;searchHighlight&quot;\">The<\/span> <span class=\"&quot;searchHighlight&quot;\">Good<\/span> <span class=\"&quot;searchHighlight&quot;\">Nurse<\/span>: A True Story of Medicine, Madness and Murder, <span class=\"&quot;searchHighlight&quot;\">the<\/span> film shies away from being a portrait of Cullen \u2013 who was bullied mercilessly both as a child and during his time in <span class=\"&quot;searchHighlight&quot;\">the<\/span> US Navy, and attempted suicide on several occasions. Ra<span class=\"&quot;searchHighlight&quot;\">the<\/span>r, scriptwriter Krysty Wilson-Cairns (1917) concentrates on <span class=\"&quot;searchHighlight&quot;\">the<\/span> endgame, as Cullen is finally caught after he takes up a role as a <span class=\"&quot;searchHighlight&quot;\">nurse<\/span> in an Intensive Care Unit at Parkland Memorial in 2003.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;Body&quot;\"><span lang=\"&quot;EN-US&quot;\">Playing \u2018detective\u2019 is his close friend at <span class=\"&quot;searchHighlight&quot;\">the<\/span> hospital Amy Loughren (Jessica Chastain), a single mo<span class=\"&quot;searchHighlight&quot;\">the<\/span>r-of-two who initially bonds with Cullen when he first arrives. For <span class=\"&quot;searchHighlight&quot;\">the<\/span> most part, it doesn\u2019t work like a Hollywood thriller, preferring a more realistic approach. A diner scene where Amy attempts to extract <span class=\"&quot;searchHighlight&quot;\">the<\/span> truth from Cullen is particularly troubling, and credit must go to Chastain, who conveys both Amy\u2019s bravery and terror with real aplomb. As much as it can be, given it\u2019s recreating <span class=\"&quot;searchHighlight&quot;\">the<\/span>se horrors, <span class=\"&quot;searchHighlight&quot;\">the<\/span> film is also deeply respectful; we don\u2019t see Cullen killing and <span class=\"&quot;searchHighlight&quot;\">the<\/span>re\u2019s no leering over his crimes. Ra<span class=\"&quot;searchHighlight&quot;\">the<\/span>r, it\u2019s a film where <span class=\"&quot;searchHighlight&quot;\">the<\/span> scale of his atrocities dawn on us.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;Body&quot;\"><span lang=\"&quot;EN-US&quot;\">Ultimately, <span class=\"&quot;searchHighlight&quot;\">The<\/span> <span class=\"&quot;searchHighlight&quot;\">Good<\/span> <span class=\"&quot;searchHighlight&quot;\">Nurse<\/span> is a film about <span class=\"&quot;searchHighlight&quot;\">the<\/span> failures of <span class=\"&quot;searchHighlight&quot;\">the<\/span> American health system to stop Cullen, with too many administrators and risk managers, as <span class=\"&quot;searchHighlight&quot;\">the<\/span>y\u2019re called, failing to investigate his activities, fearful of litigious reprisals from <span class=\"&quot;searchHighlight&quot;\">the<\/span> families of victims. For those looking for a scary serial killer movie, in true Silence of <span class=\"&quot;searchHighlight&quot;\">the<\/span> Lambs style, this isn\u2019t it.
