Doctor Who\u2019s Chris Chibnall has commended the BBC on its dedication to the sci-fi show ahead of its centenary special<\/a>, revealing that Doctor Who \u201cwould not exist\u201d outside of the broadcaster.<\/p>\n

The showrunner, who\u2019ll be leaving the show after this Sunday\u2019s special, told RadioTimes.com<\/a> and other press at a screening for The Power of the Doctor<\/a> that Doctor Who is \u201cthe most BBC show there is\u201d and that without the channel, we wouldn\u2019t have the show we know and love today.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe thing that makes [Doctor Who] magical is the BBC, because the BBC has kept it on air,\u201d he said. \u201cThe BBC created it in the first place, it was a group of people at the BBC who created it.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey kept it on air, they reinvigorated it by thinking of the idea of regeneration when they needed to recast, they\u2019ve changed it into colour, they\u2019ve changed it into different formats.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chibnall continued: \u201cThe faith of the BBC in this show\u2026 it\u2019s the most BBC show there is. It would not exist anywhere else.\u201d<\/p>\n

The outgoing showrunner, who\u2019ll be leaving Doctor Who alongside its current star Jodie Whittaker<\/a>, also praised BBC boss Charlotte Moore<\/a> for supporting the show and making it \u201creally important to the BBC\u201d.<\/p>

Whittaker added that Doctor Who doesn\u2019t restrict where its characters can go, who they are and \u201cthe social norms that often happen in TV\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I think because of that, it always feels incredibly current as well as it feels completely other as well,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s a really difficult thing to distill down\u2026 obviously, it\u2019s sci-fi, but it\u2019s also historical, it\u2019s also sometimes kitchen sink. It\u2019s for children. It\u2019s for adults, it\u2019s for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Doctor Who\u2019s upcoming special, The Power of the Doctor, will see Whittaker\u2019s Doctor fight for her existence as the Daleks, the Cybermen and the Master (Sacha Dhawan) rear their ugly heads once again.<\/p>\n

The episode will also see the Thirteenth Doctor regenerate into a new form<\/a>, which could be Ncuti Gatwa<\/a>, who is set to become the next Doctor. However, with David Tennant also set to reprise his role as the Doctor<\/a>, we don\u2019t yet know who\u2019ll be the next person to hold the key to the TARDIS.<\/p>\n
