One name who has now added her own concerns on this topic is none other than Dame Judi Dench, who has accused the series of \u201ccrude sensationalism\u201d.<\/p>\n
In a letter to The Times<\/a>, Dench said: \u201cSir John Major is not alone in his concerns that the latest series of The Crown will present an inaccurate and hurtful account of history. Indeed, the closer the drama comes to our present times, the more freely it seems willing to blur the lines between historical accuracy and crude sensationalism.\u201d<\/p>\n She went on to say that while The Crown is a \u201cbrilliant but fictionalised account of events\u201d, a \u201csignificant number of viewers, particularly overseas, may take its version of history as being wholly true\u201d.<\/p>\n Dench said: \u201cNo one is a greater believer in artistic freedom than I, but this cannot go unchallenged,\u201d before suggesting that an explicit disclaimer should additionally be put \u201cat the start of each episode\u201d.<\/p>\n Currently the series page for The Crown on Netflix<\/a> says that it is \u201cinspired by real events\u201d but is a \u201cfictional dramatisation\u201d, although this is not shown during the episodes.<\/p>\n Dench said that to add a disclaimer each episode would be a \u201cmark of respect to a sovereign who served her people so dutifully for 70 years, and to preserve its reputation in the eyes of its British subscribers\u201d.<\/p> Dench\u2019s criticism comes after former Prime Minister John Major<\/a>, who is played in the series by Jonny Lee Miller, called it \u201ca barrel-load of nonsense peddled for no other reason than to provide maximum \u2013 and entirely false \u2013 dramatic impact\u201d.<\/p>\n Major was reacting to reports that an upcoming scene sees him called to a meeting with the then-Prince of Wales, who then secretly schemes to oust the Queen.<\/p>\n Responding to similar calls to add a disclaimer to The Crown in 2020, Netflix denied that it had any plans to do so<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cWe have always presented The Crown as a drama \u2013 and we have every confidence our members understand it\u2019s a work of fiction that\u2019s broadly based on historical events,\u201d a spokesperson for the streamer said.<\/p>\n \u201cAs a result we have no plans \u2013 and see no need \u2013 to add a disclaimer.\u201d<\/p>\n The Crown season 5 will be released on 9th November 2022 and you can watch seasons 1-4 right now on Netflix<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n Looking for something else to watch?
