The upcoming Doctor Who<\/a> centenary special is set to write out Jodie Whittaker\u2019s Thirteenth Doctor following a four-year stint \u2013 and her co-star Sacha Dhawan has admitted to feeling \u201creally emotional\u201d upon watching her final scenes.<\/p>\n

Speaking to RadioTimes.com<\/a>, Dhawan \u2013 who returns in the special as the Doctor\u2019s old nemesis the Master \u2013 described Whittaker\u2019s final story, The Power of the Doctor, as \u201cepic\u201d and \u201ciconic\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt really feels like a celebration of our time,\u201d Dhawan said. \u201cI say that because it celebrates Doctor Who, but on a bigger scale, you know, we\u2019re still going through a pandemic, so much has happened, we need to pause to just celebrate how far we\u2019ve come, and Doctor Who is a really clear representation of that.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a real beacon of hope and we really need that right now, especially on our screens. Everything [in real life] is so dark.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

Recalling his experience watching the episode at a recent press screening, he added: \u201cHaving some distance from it, I felt really emotional, because I needed to see light and seeing that celebration was really emotional for me. I realised that as people right now we\u2019re all quite vulnerable\u2026 and we need the Doctor!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s no spoiler to say that The Power of the Doctor culminates in Whittaker\u2019s Doctor regenerating<\/a>, with Dhawan revealing he was \u201cso sad\u201d to see her incarnation depart.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s sad, but [the episode] is a celebration of what she represents. And what we didn\u2019t expect when she first became the Doctor was what we as a world were going to go through.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNow I realise how important Doctor Who is, coming out the other end of it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
