Some of the best moments of modern <\/span>Doctor Who<\/span><\/a> have been when actors have returned to the show \u2013 sometimes it\u2019s brief cameos like Karen Gillan in <\/span>The Time of the Doctor <\/span><\/a>or Clara sending off Twelve in <\/span>Twice Upon a Time<\/span><\/a>, other times it\u2019s triumphant returns like Elisabeth Sladen, or David Tennant for both the 50th <\/span>and <\/span>60th anniversary<\/span><\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n However, while it seems <\/span>anyone <\/span><\/i>could return to the show, some actors like Daphne Ashbrook \u2013 who appeared in the 1996 TV movie opposite Paul McGann \u2013 are forbidden from ever reprising their roles.<\/span><\/p>\n Speaking to <\/span>RadioTimes.com<\/span><\/a> ahead of the release of new documentary <\/span>Doctor Who Am I<\/span><\/a> about the legacy of the film, Ashbrook explained the complicated legal issues that her character Dr Grace Holloway is bound up in. <\/span><\/p>\n \u201cI have done some Big Finish audios but essentially I was told \u2018you can\u2019t be Grace\u2019, because someone finally found out that it was Universal that owned her, and unless they were willing to buy the rights, we could not legally bring her back.\u201d<\/span><\/p> The rights issue stems from the fact that the TV movie was developed as a co-production between Universal Studios\u00a0and\u00a0BBC Worldwide.<\/p>\n Ashbrook has been involved in a number of <\/span>Big Finish\u2019s Doctor Who<\/span> audio dramas<\/span>, but has portrayed new characters. The same rule applies for actor Yee Jee Tso, who portrayed Chang Lee in the film.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s sad because I think there\u2019s a lot of opportunity for Big Finish or whoever to have some fun with those characters altogether,\u201d said Ashbrook.<\/span><\/p>\n
