We were all expecting the Gangs of London bodycount to rise in season 2<\/a>, but the death of Alex Dumani (Paapa Essiedu) in the sophomore season premiere was a bolt from the blue.<\/span><\/p>\n

The investors ordered Elliot (\u1e62\u1ecdp\u1eb9\u0301 D\u00ecr\u00eds\u00f9), who now grudgingly works for them, to murder him, but instead he proposed that they work together, using the microchip Sean gave him, to blackmail them and \u201cget out\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

But Alex, believing the challenge to be insurmountable and unable to stomach the pressure he was under, wanted nothing to do with Elliot\u2019s plan and hurled himself off the top of the skyscraper.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can\u2019t beat them,\u201d he said, before jumping.<\/p>\n

Speaking exclusively to RadioTimes.com<\/a>, D\u00ecr\u00eds\u00f9 admitted that he<\/span> was \u201cfurious\u201d about Alex\u2019s demise, adding: \u201cI understand you want to keep your audience on your toes and be like, \u2018Nobody\u2019s safe.\u2019 And maybe that\u2019s the best way to do it. Just as you think, \u2018OK, new season\u2019 it\u2019s like, \u2018Oh! He\u2019s dead! What do you mean?!\u2019 And for it to be him as well, that was a tough nut to swallow.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He added: \u201cI\u2019m so glad I have his number and that we\u2019re friends because it would have been a great loss to my life if I never saw him again.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Chatting to RadioTimes.com<\/strong> and other press about the rug pull, showrunner Corin Hardy defended the decision: \u201cYou see in episode 1 that everything is closing in on these characters and forcing them to behave in different ways. Alex is trying to find his own way out and he\u2019s got so much pressure on him at the top of Dumani Finance.\u201d<\/p>\n

But despite Hardy\u2019s conviction in his decision to bump off Essiedu\u2019s character, he was still sad to see him go: <\/span>\u201cIt was heartbreaking because you do feel really sad when characters get killed.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I want Gangs of London to be the most dangerous show on television and you shouldn\u2019t sit there and be comfortable. You want it to be an escapist, thrilling, fun ride to watch but if you start to get to know what\u2019s going to happen and predict it, it\u2019s not that show. There are some shows that do it really well, Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad, where if you ever get comfortable, something will change that.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cIt\u2019s a [Steven] Spielberg thing, I think. If you kill a child in Jaws you really are terrified for what can happen in the rest of the movie, and in this case, what happens to Alex partly informs how no character is safe for the rest of the show; anything can happen to anyone. And I think if you do that at the beginning, it keeps you on edge.\u201d<\/p>
