Around halfway through the episode, the Master<\/a> (Sacha Dhawan) produced the Second Doctor\u2019s famous recorder and began playing a song that many viewers instantly recognised as the theme song from the hit fantasy drama Outlander<\/a>.<\/p>\n The tune \u2013 titled The Skye Boat Song \u2013 is actually a famous Scottish folk song dating back to the late 19th century, and may be extremely familiar to anyone who was brought up in Scotland.<\/p> But for many viewers, it instantly called to mind Outlander, with some fans taking to Twitter to draw attention to the connection.<\/p>\n \u201cWhen the <\/span>Master<\/span> played the <\/span>outlander<\/span> theme on the recorder I was SHOOK\u201d wrote one<\/a>, while another added<\/a>, \u201cDid anyone else notice the song the Master<\/span> played on the recorder after Yaz took the TARDIS and ditched him was the theme song to Outlander?\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n \u201c2 fandoms colliding when the <\/span>Master<\/span> plays the <\/span>Outlander<\/span> theme song on the recorder. Ahhh\u201d tweeted<\/a> another fan, with a fourth commenting<\/a>: \u201cThe Master<\/span> Doctor playing the theme from Outlander<\/span>. Now, that was unexpected.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Some fans went so far as to point out an even deeper connection, too. Outlander\u2019s protagonist Jamie is actually named after Jamie McCrimmon, the Second Doctor\u2019s companion from the late \u201960s \u2013 and so it seems likely that the choice of song was a deliberate nod to this.<\/p>\n \u201cIn last night\u2019s <\/span>#DoctorWho<\/span>, the <\/span>Master<\/span> plays The Skye Boat Song on the Doctor\u2019s old recorder,\u201d one fan wrote<\/a>. \u201cThe Skye Boat Song is the theme tune of <\/span>#Outlander<\/span>, which Diana Gabaldon has acknowledged was inspired by DW.
