From John Williams\u2019 Superman theme to Danny Elfman\u2019s Batman soundtrack, s<\/span>uperhero themes have the potential to be among the most emotive and enduring film scores.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So, with the introduction of a brand new anti-hero and superhero team in DC\u2019s latest outing Black Adam<\/a>, Grammy Award-winning composer Lorne Balfe (<\/span>Black Widow<\/a>, Mission: Impossible \u2013 Fallout<\/span>, <\/span>Top Gun: Maverick<\/span><\/a>) had a significant undertaking ahead of him.<\/span><\/p>\n

We recently sat down with the composer to discuss his approach to scoring the blockbuster, the inspiration behind the two main themes and star Dwayne Johnson\u2019s involvement.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A new origins<\/b><\/h2>\n

Consisting of a mammoth 43 tracks, the <\/span>Black Adam <\/span>score is no mean feat. But from what viewpoint did the composer approach the task?<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTo me, it\u2019s about creating sonically, an experience for the listener of what they\u2019re going to watch,\u201d Balfe said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Whilst filming was underway, the composer began writing with aids from visuals and storyboards, but research also played a key role. \u201cDelving into the history of these characters, because the Justice Society pre-dates the Justice League, so there\u2019s a big history to it. So you have to start diving deep.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Capturing the essence of an anti-hero<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n

How do you approach crafting a powerful theme for DCEU\u2019s brand new anti-hero whilst also <\/span>capturing<\/span> the enormous screen presence of Dwayne Johnson? \u201cThe original idea I had was to take an essence of who The Rock is,\u201d Balfe explained. \u201cInitially I had thought of the piece as a marching band from American high school football teams, because he used to play football.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

But that original concept evolved to mirror the anti-hero\u2019s\u2019 journey, whilst also incorporating Johnson\u2019s performance. \u201cThe main inspiration comes from what you see and when you see The Rock on the screen as Black Adam. There\u2019s a menacing force there, and there\u2019s a dark force too. So all the inspiration you need is there to tell you how it sounds. And it\u2019s what his performance is \u2013 it\u2019s dark and bombastic.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe theme is slowly building so that the fully finished presentation of it, you hear at the end,\u201d Balfe said. \u201cAnd it\u2019s the same way that the character is developing throughout the film.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Another challenge arose in introducing the typically Golden Age DC superhero team the Justice Society with a contemporary theme which also referenced their nostalgic roots.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe wanted to make sure that the audience felt connected to the tune and that it reminded them of the past, so that you felt that you knew the Society and that you felt that you knew this world before,\u201d Balfe explained. \u201cBut we were trying to get that blend of the past, but also being contemporary \u2013 that was the goal.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He added: \u201cWe didn\u2019t want to do the usual approach of that classical old school sound, we wanted [the score] to kind of feel contemporary throughout.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Crafting Kahndaq\u2019s sonic environment<\/b><\/h2>\n

While Black Adam\u2019s comic counterpart has Egyptian roots, director Jaume Collet-Serra shifted the action to the fictional Middle Eastern-based country of Kahndaq. So when crafting the regional soundscape, the composer had a particularly unique approach to incorporating various regions \u2013 particularly throughout the percussion.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe main thing with percussion \u2013 every country has their own instruments and their own ways of playing different rhythms,\u201d Balfe revealed. \u201cWe actually hired musicians from all different musical backgrounds. So there were Middle Eastern percussionists, but there were also African drummers. Then there were more Balinese-based musical instruments and Celtic instruments.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAnother interesting element was incorporating Indian musicians that were playing Bhangra instruments, and having their rhythms then performed with Latin American instruments. So you have this multi-layered tapestry that you can\u2019t quite put your finger on sonically or geographically.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Working with Dwayne Johnson<\/b><\/h2>\n

Almost a decade in the making, Johnson\u2019s passion project has finally come to fruition. With such a dedication to the movie, Balfe noted how unique Johnson\u2019s approach to the filmmaking process was.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cVery rarely does it happen,\u201d recounted Balfe of Johnson\u2019s studio visit. \u201cAnd this was his first recording session he\u2019d been to. So it was a great honour to have been able to have him come and experience it and also just the fact that he came into the room where all the musicians were, to listen to them perform his theme. It was a lovely kind of completion for him and also thanking the musicians.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI think there\u2019s very few actors who do [get involved] \u2013 Tom Cruise is the same \u2013 where they\u2019re not just actors, they\u2019re producers, and they live and breathe the whole making of the film process for the fans.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
