Last weekend, Hilary Clinton wrote on Twitter<\/a> that Call Jane \u2013 the new film from Carol screenwriter Phyllis Nagy \u2013 \u201ccould hardly be more timely.\u201d<\/p>\n

The film tells the story of The Jane Collective, an underground group that helped women find safe access to abortions in \u201960s Chicago when it was still illegal to do so, and given recent events in the US, it has taken on a whole new significance.<\/p>\n

Star Elizabeth Banks \u2013 who plays the fictional lead character Joy in the movie \u2013 hopes that the \u201cinspiring\u201d true story behind the film will help to offer some hope in a moment of great uncertainty.<\/p>\n\n\u201cI knew nothing about The Jane Collective when I read this film,\u201d she explained in an exclusive interview with <a href=\"\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/"\" target=\""_blank"\" rel=\""noopener" noopener noreferrer\">RadioTimes.com<\/a>. \u201cThis script was my introduction to their work.<\/p>\n\u201cAnd learning about them after the fact and how many procedures they performed successfully, how they took control and took it into their own hands \u2013 I found them to be incredibly brave as a group of women.<\/p>\n\u201cAnd I love that Joy, who\u2019s a fictionalised sort of representation of a woman who may show up to their doorstep, was a way for us to invite many other people into the conversation through Joy\u2019s journey with them.\u201d<\/p>\nBanks added that there were other aspects of the true story that didn\u2019t quite make it into the finished film, but which only served to highlight just how brave the women behind the real Jane Collective were.<\/p>\n\u201cIt was illegal, they were worried about getting raided,\u201d she said. \u201cSome of the things that were in the early drafts of the script that kind of fell away \u2013 they were paying bribes, the mafia was involved, they really were up against so much.<\/p>\n\u201cSo I just found them to be incredibly inspiring, and such an empowered group that also helped lead to Roe vs. Wade becoming the law of the land in America.\u201d<\/p> Although the film tackles some very tough issues, it does so in a way that is always entertaining \u2013 taking a slightly different approach than films such as Audrey Diwan\u2019s 2021 Venice prize winner Happening, which was released in UK cinemas earlier this year.<\/p>\nAnd screenwriter Nagy explained that although the two films \u201care not so very different\u201d it was important for her to show the other side of the coin.<\/p>\n\u201cI think the way that we treat lightness of touch in films is sometimes probably unfair,\u201d she explained. \u201cIn Happening, a woman suffers through 90 per cent of the film until she can get her abortion and then suffers some more. Not to minimise it \u2013 it\u2019s a great film.<\/p>\n\u201cBut the approach taken here is entirely different.
