Indeed, as we near closer to the show\u2019s August premiere date, fresh footage and information from the animated epic is pouring in, including insight into Jeffrey Wright\u2019s all-new incarnation of Uatu the Watcher.<\/p>\n
The extraterrestrial entity will be our guide through the many alternate realities created by Sylvie<\/a>\u2018s actions in Loki episode six and Wright has discussed how he settled on a voice for the immortal being.<\/p>\n \u201cA lot of times, we hear a character like this that\u2019s very powerful and wise and dramatic,\u00a0if you look at some of the old films of Greek mythology and even Egyptian mythology\u2026 we find that the characters have a British accent,\u201d Wright told Entertainment Weekly<\/a>.<\/p>\n He continued: \u201cAnd I have never really figured out why that is. Why does every wise man in the history of cinema or wise woman or sage need to be British? Filled with Marvel goodness, you can watch the clip below:<\/p>\n\n Just a few weeks later, Marvel revealed the first TV spot for What If\u2026?, which provides a rapid showcase of some of the distinct alternate realities we\u2019ll soon be introduced to.<\/p>\n\n Rather than recast and risk spoiling their winning formula, Marvel Studios is bringing back the vast majority of its core cast to voice their respective characters in What If\u2026?<\/p>\n Revealed at Marvel\u2019s exciting Phase Four Comic-Con event in summer 2019, consult the list below to find out some of the biggest names involved in the project.<\/p>\n The series was announced before the tragic death of Chadwick Boseman, but producer Kevin Feige has revealed that the actor recorded \u201cnumerous episodes\u201d which will now be released posthumously (via Emmy Magazine<\/a>).<\/p>\n Series creator AC Bradley promised fans on Twitter that there will be \u201cmore than a few surprising MCU cameos\u201d in the show \u2013 and we now know that Frank Grillo<\/a> will be returning as Crossbones.<\/p>\n Spoilers! But I can say that there are more than a few surprising MCU cameos\u2026 and characters can and do pop up in more than one episode!<\/p>\u2014 A.C. Bradley (@TheAshBradley) January 3, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote> Speaking of cameos, could Chris Evans or Robert Downey Jr follow suit? There\u2019s no word yet on whether the duo will reprise their roles as Captain America and Iron Man, after both characters were written out so poignantly in Avengers: Endgame.<\/p>\n Grandmaster actor Jeff Goldblum has claimed that Downey Jr will return for the series, but this has not yet been confirmed and it\u2019s possible he was mistaken.<\/p>\n Goldblum told Buzzfeed<\/a>: \u201cI went to the Disney Studios and I recorded the Grandmaster\u2019s voice for an episode of a show that\u2019s going to be on Disney+ called What If\u2026? where it\u2019s an animated version of all the characters we know and love from Marvel.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd this episode included the Grandmaster and Iron Man, so Robert Downey will do a voice in that.\u201d<\/p> Like the comic books of the same name, the animated show will delve into the MCU\u2019s most famous moments and ask what would have happened if they transpired another way.<\/p>\n Importantly, the anthology show will not alter the existing canon in the mainline Marvel universe, so you need not worry about any permanent changes affecting your most beloved characters. However, Marvel Studios\u2019 EVP Victoria Alonso has acknowledged that inclusion and diversity will play a part<\/a> as the franchise continues to grow.<\/p>\n Each story will be confined to its own alternate reality, in-keeping with the multiverse theme that will soon be carried over to the big screen in Benedict Cumberbatch\u2019s Doctor Strange sequel.<\/p>\n Among the questions that the show will answer, we\u2019ll find out what would have happened if Peggy Carter took the super soldier serum and became Captain Britain. We got a brief look at this in another clip earlier this summer, which showcased Peggy\u2019s transformation.<\/p>\n While we were also aware that Tony Stark\/Iron Man will be featuring, a newly released Lego set appeared to spoil<\/a> the premise of that particular episode, suggesting that Tony could end up fighting as a gladiator a la Thor: Ragnarok!<\/p>\n The first trailer also hinted at some darker timelines to be explored, including one which appears to be inspired by the popular Marvel Zombies comic book series, where Bucky confronts an undead Captain America.<\/p>\n Another chapter sees Doctor Strange go up against an evil alternate version of himself, which might well be the toughest challenge that the sorcerer supreme has yet faced. Black Widow is to get her own episode set in a post-apocalyptic world, where she is one of the only survivors after actions taken by Ultron.<\/p>\n We could also see an in-depth look at Thor\u2019s alternative existence, as it was hinted earlier this summer that one episode will show what would have happened if Thor had not found his worthiness<\/a>. Promo images including Party Thor later added fuel to these rumours.<\/p>\n In an interview with EW, star Jeffrey Wright picked out the Doctor Strange and Black Panther episodes as his favourites, the latter set to be the final performance of the late Chadwick Boseman.<\/p>\n Marvel\u2019s What If\u2026? will see Westworld star Jeffrey Wright join the Marvel Cinematic Universe as\u00a0as Uatu the Watcher, a celestial being who watches over the events of the MCU.<\/p>\n Uatu hails from a race of extraterrestrials known as Watchers, whose job it is to witness and record key events from across the various Marvel Universes, without ever intervening in how they are destined to unfold.<\/p>\n Wright will serve as the narrator of the series, with his authoritative voice performance once again being a highlight in the most recent trailer. \u201cI am The Watcher,\u201d he announces. \u201cI observe all that transpires here. But I do not; can not, will<\/em> not interfere.\u201d Wright has discussed his role in the series in recent weeks, though, and hinted that The Watcher may break his habit and become more involved after all.<\/p>\n The Watchers made their first appearance in the MCU in James Gunn\u2019s Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2, where they shared a cameo with comic book legend Stan Lee.<\/p>\n It\u2019s unclear whether Wright could reprise the role of Uatu in a live-action Marvel project, but he\u2019s certainly open to the idea<\/a>.
