Major held the position of Prime Minister between 1990 and 1997 and, as in previous seasons of The Crown, will be seen during season 5 speaking with Imelda Staunton\u2019s Queen<\/a> during their weekly meetings.<\/p>\n But who plays Major in The Crown, what is his storyline for season 5 and what has the real John Major said about his portrayal?<\/p>\n Read on for everything you need to know about who plays John Major in The Crown season 5.<\/p>\n Former Prime Minister Sir John Major is played in The Crown season 5 by Jonny Lee Miller, taking over the role which was previously played briefly in a season 4 background role by actor Marc Ozall.<\/p>\n Miller is probably best-known for his portrayal of Sick Boy in Danny Boyle\u2019s Trainspotting<\/a> and its sequel T2 Trainspotting, as well as for playing Sherlock Holmes in the contemporary CBS adaptation, Elementary<\/a>.<\/p>\n Miller has also appeared in films such as Dark Shadows and Mansfield Park, as well as series including Eli Stone and Dexter<\/a>.<\/p>\n Miller was married to Angelina Jolie from 1996 to 1999, and was also married to Orange is the New Black actress Michele Hicks from 2008 to 2018.<\/p>\n Major came into office as Prime Minister in November 1990, replacing Margaret Thatcher who had resigned following a challenge to her leadership.<\/p>\n Major was in office for seven years after winning a second term in the 1992 election when the Labour Party was led by Neil Kinnock. The Conservatives lost power in the 1997 election when Tony Blair\u2019s Labour won that election in a landslide victory.<\/p>\n During The Crown season 5, Major fears that a divided Royal Family will threaten national stability, and therefore part-way through the season acts as an intermediary in the divorce proceedings between Charles and Diana.<\/p>\n He is also seen negotiating with the then-President of Russia, Boris Yeltsin, to locate the remains of the Russian Royal Family, who were killed in 1918, in order to give them a proper burial.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n Imelda Staunton, who plays Queen Elizabeth II in The Crown season 5, said that she calls Miller \u201cJonny Lee Major\u201d, and revealed that she \u201cadored working with Jonny\u201d.<\/p>\n Staunton continued: \u201cWe were both very aware that we had all the grown-up scenes to do. We didn\u2019t know each other before and I think we were both quite frightened. We both did our very best; it felt like doing an A level syllabus.<\/p>\n \u201cI think the Queen really grew to like John Major. I was trying to think about the fact that every four years or more you\u2019re changing prime ministers and you don\u2019t moan about the previous one or read the incoming one.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n Meanwhile executive producer on the series Suzanne Mackie noted: \u201cWho would have thought that Sick Boy would one day play John Major? You really couldn\u2019t make that up. And yet he\u2019s brilliant.\u201d<\/p>\n Mackie continued: \u201cHe\u2019s wonderful. He captures John Major\u2019s gentle, quiet steeliness, if that\u2019s not too much of an oxymoron. And there\u2019s a compassion there and a thoughtfulness, yet you can\u2019t underestimate him. I\u2019ve heard so many people describing John Major as a very nice man, but also don\u2019t underestimate how smart he is.<\/p>\n \u201cYou can\u2019t be the boy from Brixton and become Prime Minister unless you really are smart, and John Major, of course, was. Jonny\u2019s really caught that still, quietly all-seeing and all-knowing demeanour.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd, of course, the relationship between John Major and The Queen was a very special one because he was the Prime Minister during her annus horribilis, during her difficult years. His quiet stoicism and compassion were deeply felt by her, and were probably very anchoring for her.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div> Following reports that a scene in the fifth season of The Crown would feature Prince Charles summoning Major to a meeting during which he schemes to oust the Queen, and that another scene features Major and his wife talking about the Royal Family in disparaging terms, Major himself hit back at the series<\/a>.<\/p>\n In a\u00a0statement released on 15th October 2022, a spokesperson for Major said: \u201cSir John has not cooperated \u2013 in any way \u2013 with The Crown. Nor has he ever been approached by them to fact-check any script material in this or any other series.<\/p>\n \u201cDiscussions between the monarch and prime minister are entirely private and \u2013 for Sir John \u2013 will always remain so.\u201d<\/p>\n The spokesperson said that the reported scenes were \u201cnothing other than damaging and malicious fiction\u201d and \u201ca barrel-load of nonsense peddled for no other reason than to provide maximum \u2013 and entirely false \u2013 dramatic impact\u201d.<\/p>\n The spokesperson added: \u201cThere was never any discussion between Sir John and the then Prince of Wales about any possible abdication of the late Queen Elizabeth II \u2013 nor was such an improbable and improper subject ever raised by the then Prince of Wales (or Sir John).\u201d<\/p>\n The Crown season 5 will be released on\u00a0Netflix<\/a>\u00a0on 9th November 2022 and you can watch seasons 1-4 right now.\u00a0Sign up for Netflix from \u00a36.99 a month<\/a>.
