The streamer released a first-look image<\/a> of incoming queen Imelda Staunton<\/a>, who\u2019ll be playing Queen Elizabeth II throughout the \u201990s in the period drama\u2019s final two series.<\/p>\n In the picture, which was shared by the show\u2019s Twitter account yesterday, Staunton is the spitting image of HRH, with her grey curls, a yellow blouse and a pearl necklace.<\/p>\n An early glimpse of our new Queen Elizabeth II, Imelda Staunton. pic.twitter.com\/ZeMSA1hDnv<\/a><\/p>\u2014 The Crown (@TheCrownNetflix) July 30, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote> Now we\u2019ve been given a glimpse at Staunton as Queen Elizabeth II, it\u2019s officially time to get excited about the upcoming series, which will see Jonathan Pryce, Lesley Manville, Elizabeth Debicki and Olivia Williams transform into the Royal Family\u2019s key figures.<\/p>\n The last season of The Crown, which drummed up more viewers than the actual Royal Wedding<\/a>, spanned Margaret Thatcher\u2019s (Gillian Anderson) time as Prime Minister with viewers meeting Princess Diana (Emma Corrin) for the first time and watching her relationship with Prince Charles rise and eventually decline over the course of 10 years.<\/p>\n For those of you hoping that Peter Morgan\u2019s hit drama will continue up until the present day, then we have some bad news for you as the creator has confirmed that season six will be the drama\u2019s last outing.<\/p>\n \u201cAs we started to discuss the storylines for series five, it soon became clear that in order to do justice to the richness and complexity of the story we should go back to the original plan and do six seasons,\u201d he said in a statement tweeted by Netflix<\/a>.\u00a0 \u201cTo be clear, series six will not bring us any closer to present-day \u2013 it will simply enable us to cover the same period in greater detail.\u201d<\/p>\n Read on for everything we know so far about season five, from the latest cast announcements to all the first-look images we could get our hands on.<\/p>\n Deadline has confirmed filming isn\u2019t set to begin until June 2021. Variety<\/a> also later confirmed that production won\u2019t start until July at North London\u2019s Elstree Studios. This means The Crown season five won\u2019t air until 2022.<\/a><\/p>\n The gap isn\u2019t unprecedented. Whenever the Queen has been recast there has been a longer break between seasons. When Claire Foy handed the reins (or is that reign?) over to Olivia Colman after the first two seasons there was a similar hiatus with no new episodes in 2018.<\/p>\n It\u2019ll come as no surprise that the cast is undergoing a change. The Crown cast<\/a> was also revamped after the first two seasons; Claire Foy starred as the Queen before Olivia Colman took over as Her Majesty, and Matt Smith starred as Prince Philip before Tobias Menzies took over the role from season three. Vanessa Kirby starred as Princess Margaret before Helena Bonham-Carter took on the role.<\/p>\n Now the cast is undergoing a change again to reflect the change in time. Here\u2019s who plays who for seasons five and six:<\/p>\n There are a few roles yet to be cast including the Queen Mother, and the remaining royal \u2018children\u2019 like Princess Anne, Andrew and Edward.<\/p>\n Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth (Harry Potter, Flesh and Blood, Downton Abbey<\/em>)<\/strong><\/p>\n Imelda Staunton is the third actress to take on the role of the Queen in The Crown following on from Olivia Colman. \u201cI\u2019m absolutely thrilled to confirm Imelda Staunton as Her Majesty The Queen,\u201d The Crown\u2019s creator Peter Morgan told\u00a0Deadline<\/a>. \u201cImelda is an astonishing talent and will be a fantastic successor to Claire Foy and Olivia Colman.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI have loved watching\u00a0The Crown\u00a0from the very start,\u201d Staunton told The Hollywood Reporter<\/a> after being cast. \u201cAs an actor it was a joy to see how both Claire Foy and Olivia Colman brought something special and unique to Peter Morgan\u2019s scripts. I am genuinely honoured to be joining such an exceptional creative team and to be taking\u00a0The Crown\u00a0to its conclusion.\u201d<\/p>\n Staunton has already admitted playing the Queen will have an \u201cextra challenge\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cI think my sort of extra challenge, as if I needed it, is that I\u2019m now doing the Queen that we\u2019re a little more familiar with,\u201d she told People. \u201cWith Claire Foy, it was almost history and now I\u2019m playing one that people could say \u2018she doesn\u2019t do that,\u2019 \u2018she\u2019s not like that,\u2019 and that\u2019s my personal b\u00eate noire.\u201d<\/p>\n Speaking on This Morning in October 2020, Staunton said that she had already started working on the role by listening and watching archival footage of the monarch, ahead of filming in summer 2021.<\/p>\n During a chat with Eamonn and Ruth today, Imelda Staunton revealed how she is preparing to play the Queen in season five of The Crown ???? \u00a0<\/p>\n Speaking to Radio Times<\/strong><\/a>, Colman expressed her support for Staunton. \u201cImelda is extraordinary and she\u2019s going to do it all much better than me. I can\u2019t wait to watch what she does,\u201d she said. Colman added she \u201cwouldn\u2019t dare\u201d pass on any advice on tackling the role.<\/p>\n In a virtual conversation put on by Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts Colman reflected on her time as the Queen admitting how hard a role it was to play.<\/p>\n \u201cBecause behind closed doors, we don\u2019t know what she\u2019s like,\u201d she said<\/a>. \u201cI had a little bit of play with that. But definitely\u2026 the hardest part I\u2019ve done is someone who\u2019s real. I\u2019m not ashamed to say that I\u2019m quite pleased now to be able to move on to something else.\u201d<\/p>\n Lesley Manville as Princess Margaret (Phantom Thread<\/em>)<\/strong><\/p>\n The Crown depicts the duty-bound Queen and her flamboyant younger sister, Princess Margaret, as two sides of a coin; and for season five, the role of Margaret will be played by acclaimed actress Lesley Manville \u2013 who was reportedly the producer\u2019s first choice for the role.<\/p>\n \u201cI could not be happier to be playing Princess Margaret, the baton is being passed on from two formidable actresses and I really don\u2019t want to let the side down,\u201d Manville said.<\/p>\n She added: \u201cFurthermore, to play siblings with my dear friend Imelda Staunton will be nothing short of a complete joy.\u201d<\/p>\n The Olivier Award-winning actress recently opened up about the \u201cpressure\u201d of playing Princess Margaret, revealing that she was \u201creading all the books\u201d and rewatching The Crown in preparation for the role.<\/p>\n Helena Bonham Carter said she was \u201cso chuffed\u201d by Manville\u2019s casting,\u00a0 explaining:<\/a> \u201cit\u2019s like handing a baton.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s like this race that we\u2019re all running, and Vanessa Kirby was incredibly enthusiastic and kind and generous and gave me lots of tips,\u201d Bonham Carter said. \u201cI said, help how do I do this! Because you can get a bit overwhelmed by all the research. And you\u00a0know<\/em>\u00a0it\u2019s conspicuous, you know people are going to watch it, which is a great gift.\u201d<\/p>\n She added: \u201cLesley, I feel like I should hand her the cigarette holder that I used, as a baton. Over to you, woman.\u201d<\/p>\n Jonathan Pryce as Prince Philip (Two Popes<\/em>)<\/strong><\/p>\n Oscar nominee Jonathan Pryce (Game of Thrones) will take over from Matt Smith and Tobias Menzies in the part of Prince Philip.<\/p>\n \u201cI am delighted to be working with Netflix again,\u201d he said in a statement<\/a>. \u201cThe positive experience I had making The Two Popes has given me the confidence to tackle the daunting prospect of portraying Prince Philip. To be doing so with Peter Morgan and in the company of Imelda and Lesley will be a joy.\u201d<\/p>\n Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana (The Great Gatsby<\/em>, Tenet<\/em>)<\/strong><\/p>\n Also confirmed for season five is\u00a0Elizabeth Debicki as The Crown\u2019s Princess Diana<\/a>, who will later reprise the role for season six. The actress, known for The Night Manager and Tenet, is following in the footsteps of Emma Corrin, who originated the role in season four.<\/p>\n \u201cPrincess Diana\u2019s spirit, her words and her actions live in the hearts of so many. It is my true privilege and honour to be joining this masterful series, which has had me absolutely hooked from episode one,\u201d Debicki said in a statement.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s a dream role. She is such a remarkable human being and she really does still live in the hearts of so many people,\u201d\u00a0she told the\u00a0Mirror<\/a>.<\/p>\n Speaking later to Gotham magazine<\/a> she said Diana is \u201clike a symbol \u2013 like a magical person.\u201d<\/p>\n After winning a BAFTA for her portrayal of Diana, Corrin spoke about handing the role over to Debicki. \u00a0\u201cI would be so willing to [chat with her] if she wanted to reach out, but that\u2019s a decision she has to make for herself,\u201d she told Vulture<\/a>. Corrin did have some advice for her successor. \u201cMake it your own. Put blinkers on for the rest of the world and for the pressure. Grab onto things that resonate with you, that you relate to, or that you empathize with. And always trust the script. It won\u2019t let you down,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n Olivia Williams (The Nevers) has also now been cast as Camilla Parker Bowles<\/a>.<\/p>\n According to\u00a0The Hollywood Reporter<\/a>, The Affair star Dominic West is in \u201cfinal talks\u201d to play the current heir to the throne in season five, however the news has not yet been confirmed. As for other actors\u00a0who should replace Josh O\u2019Connor as Prince Charles<\/a>, we\u2019ve suggested Succession\u2019s Matthew Macfadyen, The Split\u2019s Stephen Mangan and Wolf Hall\u2019s Damian Lewis for the part \u2013 Netflix, take note!<\/p>\n With season five of The Crown covering the 90\u2019s, Labour prime minister Tony Blair, who spent 10 years in No. 10, is about to get the Netflix treatment. While official casting for the role hasn\u2019t been announced,\u00a0The Sun<\/a> reported in April that Netflix had approached Andrew Scott for the role, however the Fleabag star is \u201cunavailable\u201d to make the current filming dates for season five.<\/p>\n Netflix hasn\u2019t released an official synopsis but we can work out the time period from the usual timeframe jumps we get between seasons. We ended season four of The Crown in Christmas 1990 just after Thatcher resigned. Season five will focus on the beginning of the \u201990s, with John Major taking over as PM.<\/p>\n If we\u2019re correct, then these are the potential events in Royal history that season five could cover:<\/p>\n The Queen has said herself that 1992 was an \u201cannus horribilis\u201d aka a horrible year<\/a>, and she wasn\u2019t wrong. Princess Anne divorced Captain Mark Phillips, Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson split and not long after Fergie was papped on holiday with American businessman John Bryan and that\u2019s all before we even get to the Windsor Castle fire.<\/p>\n Oh, and it\u2019s also the year Charles and Diana finally announced their separation. The couple\u2019s divorce wasn\u2019t until 28th August 1996 though, so we\u2019d expect that to fall more into season six.<\/p>\n Andrew Morton\u2019s book Diana: Her True Story<\/a> was also published. Morton, a journalist, had already planned to write the book, but Diana heard about his plans and got in touch to give him her side of events. The famous Diana tapes were sent to Morton revealing what she really thought of her marriage troubles, the royal family and Charles. At the time the book rocked the country. More importantly Diana denied all involvement. Morton even protected her, telling the Independent<\/a> he felt \u201cshe trusted [him\u201d so revealing she was his source would have \u201cbeen a betrayal\u201d. Years later, long after Diana\u2019s death the truth \u2013 and the tapes \u2013 came out.<\/p>\n On 31st August, 1997 , Diana and her boyfriend Dodi Fayed were both killed in a car accident in Paris. The only survivor was Diana\u2019s bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones. Diana was lying on the backseat of the car at the time of the crash while the vehicle was being pursued by paparazzi attempting to grab a photograph of her.<\/p>\n We expect The Crown season five will cover up until Charles and Diana\u2019s divorce, leaving Diana\u2019s death for the sixth season.
