The Crown\u2019s<\/a> penultimate chapter, season 5<\/a>, commences in 1991 and heads through to the spring of 1997, with a number of flashbacks scattered throughout. It does not cover the death of Diana, which happened at the end of August 1997.<\/p>\n

The main draw for many viewers will undoubtedly be the Princess of Wales\u2019 tumultuous relationship<\/a> with the now King Charles III, but there\u2019s plenty more explored in the latest instalment of Netflix\u2019s royal drama.<\/p>\n

The Crown season 5 timeline<\/strong><\/h2>\n

1991<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Charles and Diana\u2019s Italy trip<\/strong> \u2013 it was marketed as a \u2018second honeymoon\u2019 to celebrate their 10-year wedding anniversary. In the drama, Charles leaves the holiday early to return to England.<\/p>\n

Andrew Morton\u2019s book, Diana: Her True Story<\/strong> \u2013 the Princess recorded her answers to Morton\u2019s questions remotely via tape, with her friend Dr James Colthurst delivering them to the journalist.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe book trade didn\u2019t think the world was interested in another Diana publication, so early subscriptions were paltry and only 18,000 copies were printed,\u201d Morton told The Telegraph<\/a> in 2015. \u201cWe subsequently lost sales because there were weren\u2019t enough books to go around. Similarly, no newspaper wanted to serialise it.\u201d<\/p>\n

But that soon changed.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was only when a friend of Princess Diana\u2019s, who had a contact at News International, whispered that my story was true, that Andrew Neil, the then editor of The Sunday Times, decided to look at it again. The book went on to sell about seven million copies in 80 countries, and I made more than \u00a31m over several years.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018Annus horribilis\u2019 \u2013 <\/strong>1992 was described as such by the Queen for a number of reasons:<\/p>\n

Diana and Charles\u2019 separation <\/strong>\u2013 the announcement came after 11 years of marriage.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, though saddened, understand and sympathise with the difficulties that have led to this decision,\u201d said Buckingham Palace in a statement. \u201cThe fact is that, with great sadness, they have recognised that their continuing relationship would be better under separate domestic arrangements.They are still fond of one another and fully supportive of one another\u2019s intentions to fulfil their individual public duties as wholeheartedly as before.\u201d<\/p>\n

Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson\u2019s separation <\/strong>\u2013 intimate photographs of Sarah on holiday with Texan multimillionaire Steve Wyatt were published by the press. According to Vanity Fair<\/a>, Diana first introduced the pair to one another.<\/p>\n

Princess Anne and Captain\u00a0Mark Phillips\u2019 divorce <\/strong>\u2013 they had separated in 1989. A short time later, her relationship with Timothy Laurence, who she remains married to today, was made public.<\/p>\n

Windsor Castle fire <\/strong>\u2013 a curtain next to the altar in Queen Victoria\u2019s Private Chapel was set ablaze by a faulty spotlight. 115 rooms were damaged and the repairs cost roughly \u00a336.5 million.<\/p>\n

1993<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Tampongate <\/strong>\u2013 the transcript of a 1989 phone conversation between Charles and Camilla was made public. The audio was picked up by a ham radio and later published by the Daily Mirror<\/a>. The newspaper waited until Charles\u2019 marriage to Diana had fallen apart before pressing ahead. Camilla was married to Andrew Parker Bowles when the phone call took place.<\/p>\n

It was dubbed both \u2018Camillagate\u2019 and \u2018Tampongate\u2019, with the latter referring to the following:<\/p>\n

Charles: \u201cOh, God. I\u2019ll just live inside your trousers or something. It would be much easier!\u201d<\/p>\n

Camilla (laughing): \u201cWhat are you going to turn into, a pair of knickers? (Both laugh). Oh, you\u2019re going to come back as a pair of knickers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Charles: \u201cOr, God forbid, a Tampax. Just my luck! (Laughs)\u201d<\/p>\n

Prince Charles\u2019 interview with journalist Jonathan Dimbleby <\/strong>\u2013 in the televised conversation, titled Charles: The Private Man, the Public Role, he addressed his marriage to Diana and his \u201cfriendship\u201d with Camilla, plus his belief that the monarchy was in a \u201cmake or break time\u201d following repeated debate about the role of the Royal Family.<\/p>\n

Diana\u2019s revenge dress<\/strong> \u2013 she attended a Vanity Fair party at the Serpentine Gallery in the now iconic LBD on the same evening as the Dimbleby interview. It was made for her by Greek designer Christina Stambolian and was described by The Telegraph Magazine as \u2018The piece de resistance \u2026 the brave, wicked, historic little \u2018Serpentine Cocktail\u201d.<\/p>\n

Boris Yeltsin<\/strong> \u2013 Prime Minister John Major travelled to Moscow to meet with the Russian leader. He was the first Western leader to visit the country since the coup. Yeltsin later paid a visit to Buckingham Palace to meet with the Queen.<\/p>\n

That episode also explores how the British Royal family is connected to the Romanovs.<\/p>\n

Diana\u2019s relationship with Dr Hasnat Khan<\/strong> \u2013 her relationship with the British-Pakistani cardiac surgeon ended in 1997, just five weeks before her death.<\/p>\n

In an interview with The Mail on Sunday<\/a>, he said: \u201cI found her a very normal person. We all have our drawbacks, but I found her a very normal person with great qualities, and some personal drawbacks, like bad habits. We all have drawbacks.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cI think she did great work for the country and for people all over the world \u2013 not just in the UK but everywhere. I think that is important.\u201d<\/p>\n

Diana\u2019s Panorama interview with Martin Bashir<\/strong> \u2013 it was during that exchange that she remarked there were \u201cthree people\u201d in her marriage. Diana also asserted that she would \u201cnot go quietly\u201d. It was later uncovered that the journalist had forged fake documents to secure the interview.<\/p>\n

Charles and Diana\u2019s divorce<\/strong> \u2013 it was finalised almost 15 years after their wedding, but the pair had long gone their separate ways by that point.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter considering the present situation the Queen wrote to both the prince and princess earlier this week and gave them her view, supported by the Duke of Edinburgh, that an early divorce is desirable,\u201d said a Buckingham Palace spokesperson.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Prince of Wales also takes this view and has made this known to the Princess of Wales since the letter.\u201d<\/p>\n

Labour wins the General Election<\/strong> \u2013 under Tony Blair and his New Labour banner, the party achieved a landslide victory, with the Tory party suffering its greatest defeat in its history. It had been 18 years since the party was last in power. Blair was the youngest PM since Lord Liverpool in 1812.<\/p>\n

Royal Yacht Britannia to be decommissioned<\/strong> \u2013 it was launched by the Queen in 1953. Over time, the cost of its upkeep had become a source of fierce debate. Its final official trip saw Charles travel to Hong Kong to mark the handing over of the region to China from the UK.<\/p>

1981<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Chariots of Fire Oscar win<\/strong> \u2013 the film was produced by Mohamed\u2019s company Allied Stars LTD. Dodi was the chief executive.<\/p>\n

1986<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Diana and Dodi\u2019s first meeting <\/strong>\u2013\u00a0their paths first crossed at a polo match when she was still married to Charles. The pair didn\u2019t begin dating until July 1997 after Diana joined Dodi and his father on a holiday to St Tropez.<\/p>\n

1990<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Villa Windsor renovation<\/strong> \u2013 following the Duchess of Windsor\u2019s death (she was married to the former King of England Edward VIII), Mohamed leased the property and spent more than $12 million restoring it to its former glory.<\/p>\n
