Not only did the face of the Doctor change in the most recent generation, but so did his clothes<\/a>, which never usually happens during a regeneration.<\/p>\n However, new showrunner Russell T Davies has addressed the anomaly, revealing that he was \u201cabsolutely certain that the clothes would regenerate\u201d with Tennant\u2019s return.<\/p>\n Speaking to Doctor Who Magazine<\/a>, Davies said: \u201cI was very certain that I didn\u2019t want David to appear in Jodie\u2019s costume. I think the notion of men dressing in \u2018women\u2019s clothes\u2019, the notion of drag, is very delicate. I\u2019m a huge fan of that culture and the dignity of that, it\u2019s truly a valuable thing.<\/p>\n \u201cBut it has to be done with immense thought and respect. With respect to Jodie and her Doctor, I think it can look like mockery when a straight man wears her clothes. To put a great big six-foot Scotsman into them looks like we\u2019re taking the mickey.\u201d<\/p>\n He added that he worried that a scene in which Tennant\u2019s Doctor wore Thirteen\u2019s outfit would be printed in newspapers \u201cfor the rest of time\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cIf they can play with gender in a sarcastic or critical way, they will,\u201d he added. \u201cWe could have the Doctor dressed as a knight, or dressed as God, or dressed as William Hartnell, and the only photo they\u2019d print would be of David in what they considered to be women\u2019s clothes.\u201d<\/p> The incoming showrunner feared the moment would be \u201cweaponised\u201d and used to mock feminine traits and drag culture.<\/p>\n Tennant is set to appear as his Doctor in\u00a0next year\u2019s 60th-anniversary celebrations<\/a> before Ncuti Gatwa<\/a> takes over the role, with Catherine Tate also reprising her role as Donna.<\/p>\n Doctor Who magazine issue 584 is out now.
