Sex Education<\/span><\/a> star Ncuti Gatwa was announced as the new Doctor<\/a><\/span> back in May 2022 ahead of Jodie Whittaker\u2019s last adventure.<\/p>\n However, in a surprise twist, Whittaker\u2019s Doctor <\/span>regenerated into David Tennant<\/a> in The Power of the Doctor<\/a>, with this new <\/span>incarnation officially being referred to as \u201cthe Fourteenth Doctor\u201d.<\/p>\n Tennant will portray the Time Lord in three anniversary specials, which are set to air in November 2023, before\u00a0Gatwa takes on the keys of the TARDIS as the Fifteenth Doctor later in 2023.<\/p>\n Teasing what\u2019s to come, Gatwa previously promised \u201csome extraordinary storylines for this season\u201d, which is scheduled to begin filming in full in November<\/a>.<\/p>\n But when exactly can we expect season 14 of the popular sci-fi show? Read on for everything you need to know.<\/p>\n Following the end of Jodie Whittaker\u2019s reign as the Thirteenth Doctor, the BBC has confirmed when we can expect new episodes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Unfortunately, it\u2019s quite a long way off in the future.<\/span><\/p>\n The 60th anniversary specials, featuring David Tennant and Catherine Tate, are set to arrive in November 2023.<\/span><\/p>\n Following that,\u00a0Ncuti Gatwa\u2019s first full episode as the new Doctor will air \u201cover the festive season\u201d in 2023.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n It\u2019s as yet unclear if this means a New Year\u2019s Day instalment, or a Christmas Day episode, and only time will tell\u2026<\/p> Our brand-new Doctor Who was unveiled back in May 2022 ahead of Jodie Whittaker\u2019s last adventure in The Power of the Doctor, with\u00a0Sex Education<\/a> star Ncuti Gatwa announced in the role.<\/p>\n Ncuti said at the time: \u201cThere aren\u2019t quite the words to describe how I\u2019m feeling. A mix of deeply honoured, beyond excited and of course a little bit scared. This role and show means so much to so many around the world, including myself, and each one of my incredibly talented predecessors has handled that unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care. I will endeavour my upmost to do the same.\u201d<\/p>\n He added:\u00a0\u201cRussell T Davies is almost as iconic as the Doctor himself and being able to work with him is a dream come true. His writing is dynamic, exciting, incredibly intelligent and fizzing with danger.<\/p>\n \u201cAn actor\u2019s metaphorical playground. The entire team have been so welcoming and truly give their hearts to the show. And so as much as it\u2019s daunting, I\u2019m aware I\u2019m joining a really supportive family. Unlike the Doctor, I may only have one heart but I am giving it all to this show.\u201d<\/p>\n Meanwhile, returning showrunner Russell T Davies said: \u201cThe future is here and it\u2019s Ncuti! Sometimes talent walks through the door and it\u2019s so bright and bold and brilliant, I just stand back in awe and thank my lucky stars.<\/p>\n \u201cNcuti dazzled us, seized hold of the Doctor and owned those TARDIS keys in seconds. It\u2019s an honour to work with him, and a hoot, I can\u2019t wait to get started. I\u2019m sure you\u2019re dying to know more, but we\u2019re rationing ourselves for now, with the wonderful Jodie\u2019s epic finale yet to come. But I promise you, 2023 will be spectacular!\u201d<\/p>\n No other stars have officially been announced as part of the new season 14 cast as yet, not even Ncuti\u2019s companion, though that hasn\u2019t stopped Whovians speculating who it might be and,\u00a0from\u00a0Bridgerton<\/a> star Nicola Coughlan, to EastEnders\u2019 Rose Ayling-Ellis<\/a>, there are a number of fan theories.<\/p>\n In addition, there was a long list of talented stars who were previously tipped to be the next Doctor<\/a> before Ncuti\u2019s announcement, including T\u2019Nia Miller, Olly Alexander, Jo Martin, Lydia West, Olly Alexander\u00a0and Michaela Coel.\u00a0Might they pop up in another capacity? We\u2019ll have to wait and see\u2026<\/p>\n Mandip Gill has also teased that Yaz could return to the show one day.<\/p>\n When asked if the centenary special will be Yaz\u2019s last outing recently on\u00a0BBC\u2019s The One Show, she replied:\u00a0\u201cIt will be mine. Well, not forever, because who knows in the world of Doctor Who? But [Yaz\u2019s story] definitely comes to an end in that episode, but not forever because who knows? See what I did there?\u201d<\/p>\n Of course, little is known about the plot of the upcoming season, but we have had some clues.<\/p>\n The return of showrunner Russel T Davies<\/a>, who made Doctor Who popular again with his 2005 revival, promises change is ahead.<\/p>\n Speaking in February 2022 about his shock return, he teased a \u201cbrand new ways of telling stories\u201d.<\/a><\/p>\n He said: \u201cThe truth of it is, everyone lies when they leave Doctor Who and says \u2018Oh, I\u2019ve moved on! \u2013 I\u2019ve been thinking about it since I was three, so there\u2019s no way you stop thinking about it.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThere are things coming up that are brand new ways of telling stories that have never been done before, so it just feels new \u2013 I wouldn\u2019t have gone back if it wasn\u2019t feeling new,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n He went on to explain that Doctor Who has a unique appeal to writers, as each week brings its own distinct premise and cast of characters.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m sitting here now, 10 pages away from a climax thinking, \u2018God, I\u2019ve never been in this territory before \u2013 this is strange and new and hopefully I\u2019ll learn something out of it,\u201d added Davies.<\/p>\n \u201cThe reason why I\u2019ve worked on 34 programmes in my life is that I don\u2019t normally like continuing series. That\u2019s why It\u2019s A Sin came to an end and I just moved on.\u201d<\/p>\n He concluded: \u201cI just like looking at a new set of challenges every time and another blank page, but Doctor Who is always a blank page.\u201d<\/p>\n What\u2019s more, to mark the BBC\u2019s recent deal with Disney that will allow\u00a0streamer Disney Plus to become the home of Doctor Who outside the UK and Ireland<\/a>, Gatwa took part in a Doctor Who Q&A shared on Twitter and revealed what his ideal storyline would look like.<\/p>\n \u201cI cannot wait to put my stamp on the character,\u201d he said. He also reveals where he would like his Time Lord to travel, saying: \u201cI would take my TARDIS to Africa, I would take my TARDIS to Nigeria.\u201d<\/p>\n Adding that the location would give the Doctor the chance to interact with African mythology, he said: \u201cI would love for the Doctor to meet the Orisha, which were a set of gods in Nigerian mythology, and I think that he\u2019d have a lovely old time,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n He also revealed that \u201cthere are some extraordinary storylines for this season\u201d.<\/p>\n We can\u2019t wait!<\/p>\n No, not yet, but we do have a\u00a0teaser trailer for the 60th-anniversary specials<\/a> for you to enjoy, which was released following the airing of The Power of the Doctor.<\/p>\n Crucially, the trailer concludes with a glimpse at Ncuti Gatwa\u2019s Fifteenth Doctor as he shouts: \u201cSomeone tell me what the hell is going on here!\u201d<\/p>\n Gatwa may feature on Doctor Who at the end of the anniversary specials \u2013 and before season 14 kicks off \u2013 if the teaser is anything to go by.
