The latest season of The Crown<\/a> depicts the famous Panorama interview by Martin Bashir with Diana, Princess of Wales.<\/p>\n Elizabeth Debicki<\/a> portrays the late Princess of Wales in scenes showing the build-up to and aftermath of the discussion, which saw Diana reveal the extent of her issues with her husband and the royal family.<\/p>\n The controversial interview has been much-discussed in recent years due to the circumstances in which Bashir secured the discussion with the Princess.<\/p>\n Among the repercussions of the interview was the Queen requesting that the Prince and Princess of Wales divorce.<\/p>\n So, what was said in the interview and is it available to watch online?<\/p> Speaking about her metamorphosis from Lady Diana Spencer into the universally recognised Princess of Wales, Diana explained how she struggled to understand why so many people across the world were interested her, simply putting it down to Charles\u2019s work \u2013 before she clocked that people were \u201cmaking money out of [her]\u201d.<\/p>\n She also spoke about the pressure she felt to provide male heirs and also what came after she gave birth to her eldest son, Prince William. Diana initially felt peace after a \u201cdifficult pregnancy\u201d. However, that solace didn\u2019t last long as she suffered from post-natal depression and said she felt very \u201clow\u201d.<\/p>\n Diana then spoke about the lack of support she felt from the royal family over her depression.<\/p>\n She claimed: \u201cWell, it gave everybody a wonderful new label: Diana\u2019s unstable and Diana\u2019s mentally unbalanced. And unfortunately that seems to have stuck on and off over the years.\u201d<\/p>\n The Princess also spoke candidly about how she had begun to self-harm by cutting herself, explaining that she\u2019d seen women doing \u201csimilar things\u201d and then started to understand why they hurt themselves.<\/p>\n Diana added that she felt \u201ccompelled to perform\u201d and not show her true feelings to the outside world, and all noted how she privately suffered from \u201cbulimia for a number of years\u201d.<\/p>\n The Princess gave an insight into her marriage with the then-Prince of Wales, who she claimed had different interests from her and resented the press attention she received.<\/p>\n When the subject of Charles\u2019s affair with the married Camilla Parker Bowles was raised, Diana revealed that she had long been aware of the affair and that it had triggered episodes of her bulimia.<\/p>\n The Princess claimed that she was made to feel isolated and be portrayed as \u201cunstable, sick\u201d and \u201can embarrassment\u201d.<\/p>\n In a famous quote, Diana said: \u201cWell, there were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded.\u201d<\/p>\n In the interview, Diana also confirmed that while she had not met with the biographer Andrew Morton, she did allow him access to her close friends to help provide him with an insight into her life. In reality, Morton was provided with audio tapes of Diana\u2019s own words for the book.<\/p>\n After the release of Morton\u2019s book and Jonathan Dimbleby\u2019s biography of Charles, it was agreed that a separation should be brought about \u2013 but it had to be discussed with the Prime Minister, Her Majesty and others.<\/p>\n Diana recalled hearing the news of her separation in 1992 on the radio, and felt like \u201cthe fairy tale had come to an end\u201d.<\/p>\n Diana claimed that following the legal separation, she was seen as more of a \u201cproblem\u201d and a \u201cliability\u201d by the royal family.<\/p>\n The Princess of Wales also claimed that there were moves to discredit her with recorded phone calls being leaked and also claims that she had harassed a man named Oliver Hoare with numerous phone calls in a short space of time.<\/p>\n On the notion that the royals were trying to remove her as a problem, Diana boldly stated: \u201cShe won\u2019t go quietly, that\u2019s the problem. I\u2019ll fight to the end\u2026 because I believe that I have a role to fulfil and I\u2019ve got two children to bring up.\u201d<\/p>\n After Charles went public about his relationship with Camilla in his biography, Diana revealed that she went to William\u2019s school in Eton to speak with him about what had happened. She explained that she answered any questions he had, including why his parents split; Diana claimed it was media pressure and Camilla that made their relationship \u201cvery difficult\u201d.<\/p>\n Diana described the young William as \u201ca deep thinker\u201d\u00a0 but \u201cwe don\u2019t know for a few years how it\u2019s gone in\u201d.<\/p>\n The Princess said that she claimed \u201csome responsibility\u201d for the breakdown of her marriage.<\/p>\n After James Hewitt went public about his romantic relationship with Diana in 1989, the Princess revealed in the interview that she felt hurt by his actions.<\/p>\n \u201cYes, I adored him,\u201d said Diana. \u201cYes, I was in love with him, but I was very let down.\u201d<\/p>\n She also described how William had comforted her with a box of chocolates after the affair was exposed.<\/p>\n Despite how isolated she felt at Kensington Palace and the pressures of the media attention, Diana revealed her hopes for her future role in public life, using her privileged position and ability to communicate in order to do good.<\/p>\n The Princess denied that she was also setting out to damage the monarchy, which she sees as her children\u2019s future.<\/p>\n \u201cI will fight for my children on any level in order for them to be happy and have peace of mind and carry out their duties,\u201d she defiantly said.<\/p>\n Diana advocated for the monarchy and the public \u201cwalking hand in hand\u201d and being less distant from one another.<\/p>\n The Princess also revealed how she had exposed her sons William and Harry to humanitarian causes to give them the knowledge on how to make a difference as \u201cknowledge is power\u201d, hoping that they could understand others less fortunate than themselves.<\/p>\n On the subject of Diana and Charles potentially divorcing, the Princess revealed that she was not advocating divorce and at the time was awaiting her ex-husband\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n She revealed that she had concerns for her children if the pair did divorce, but doubted that she would ever become Queen.<\/p>\n Diana then memorably said: \u201cI\u2019d like to be a queen of people\u2019s hearts, in people\u2019s hearts, but I don\u2019t see myself being Queen of this country. I don\u2019t think many people will want me to be Queen.\u201d<\/p>\n She stated that she felt the establishment would block her from having such a role due to her approach to her work and her strong will.<\/p>\n Finally, the subject of Charles\u2019s future and suitability to be King was brought up. Diana noted that Charles could find being King \u201csuffocating\u201d, adding that she didn\u2019t know how he would cope with that.<\/p>\n The Princess refused to answer whether it would be better for the monarchy to skip Charles and pass straight to William.<\/p>\n The interview ended with Diana being asked about her reasons for giving the interview, with the Princess claiming that she wanted to \u201creassure\u201d her supporters that she had not let them down and that her priorities were her children and \u201cthe man on the street\u201d.<\/p>\n When she was lastly questioned on whether the interview was her opportunity for revenge on Charles, Diana denied this, saying she doesn\u2019t have \u201cresentment\u201d, only \u201csadness\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cI sit here with hope because there\u2019s a future ahead, a future for my husband, a future for myself and a future for the monarchy.\u201d<\/p>\n The 1995 episode of Panorama titled An Interview with HRH The Princess of Wales<\/b>\u00a0is not currently officially available to watch.<\/p>\n An inquiry by Lord Dyson ruled in 2021 that Martin Bashir had conducted \u201cdeceitful behaviour\u201d by commissioning fake statements and documents which were shown to Diana\u2019s brother Charles, Earl Spencer, in an effort to obtain an interview with Diana.<\/p>\n In a \u201cserious breach\u201d of BBC guidelines, it was ruled the BBC \u201cfell short of high standards of integrity and transparency\u201d.<\/p>\n In a statement apologising for the \u201cstupid\u201d use of faked statements following the inquiry, Bashir said: \u201cThe bank statements had no bearing whatsoever on the personal choice by Princess Diana to take part in the interview.<\/p>\n \u201cEvidence handed to the inquiry in her own handwriting unequivocally confirms this, and other compelling evidence presented to Lord Dyson reinforces it.\u201d<\/p>\n As seen in the inquiry, a handwritten note by Diana in December 1995 \u2013 written following the interview \u2013 reads: \u201cMartin Bashir did not show me any documents, nor give me any information that I was not previously aware of.\u201d<\/p>\n The Princess added that she had \u201cno regrets\u201d about doing the interview.<\/p>\n In response, to this BBC director-general Tim Davie said: \u201cAlthough the report states that Diana, Princess of Wales, was keen on the idea of an interview with the BBC, it is clear that the process for securing the interview fell far short of what audiences have a right to expect. We are very sorry for this. Lord Dyson has identified clear failings.\u201d<\/p>\n The BBC has apologised to Earl Spencer and written to Diana\u2019s sons Prince William and Prince Harry.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n As a result, BBC\u2019s director-general Tim Davie ruled in 2022 that the interview would never be broadcast<\/a> by the corporation again.<\/p>\n Davie said: \u201cNow we know about the shocking way that the interview was obtained, I have decided that the BBC will never show the programme again; nor will we license it in whole or part to other broadcasters.<\/p>\n \u201cIt does of course remain part of the historical record and there may be occasions in the future when it will be justified for the BBC to use short extracts for journalistic purposes, but these will be few and far between and will need to be agreed at executive committee level and set in the full context of what we now know about the way the interview was obtained.<\/p>\n \u201cI would urge others to exercise similar restraint.\u201d<\/p>\n In the same statement, Davie commented: \u201cFollowing publication of the Dyson Report last year we have been working with those who suffered as a result of the deceitful tactics used by the BBC in pursuit of its interview with Diana, Princess of Wales for the Panorama programme in 1995, including the matters that were mentioned in court today in respect of Miss Tiggy Legge-Bourke, now Mrs Alexandra Pettifer.\u201d<\/p>\n Numerous copies of the interview exist, however, and circulate on the internet and social media.<\/p>\n **If you have been affected by the issues raised in this article, you can find help and support at\u00a0MIND<\/a> or by calling MIND\u2019s confidential Infoline on 0300 123 3393.**<\/em><\/p>\n The Crown seasons 1 to 5 are available now on Netflix<\/a>. <\/strong>Sign up for Netflix from \u00a36.99 a month<\/a>.
