<\/p>
Today finally marks the release of\u00a0Black Panther: Wakanda Forever<\/a> in UK cinemas \u2013 more than four years after the first film arrived to a wave of positive reviews.<\/p>\n The film is a deeply emotional one, paying tribute to T\u2019Challa<\/a> actor Chadwick Boseman after he tragically passed away from colon cancer in 2020, with the decision having been made not to recast his character<\/a>.<\/p>\n Instead, it is a group of characters from the first film who take the lead in the sequel \u2013 including Letitia Wright\u2019s Shuri and Lupita Nyong\u2019o\u2019s Nakia, meaning it is one of the first big blockbusters with a cast made up predominantly of black women.<\/p> \u201cI think that the world of Wakanda was uniquely poised to allow for this,\u201d Nyong\u2019o explained in an exclusive interview with RadioTimes.com<\/a> when asked if the film marked another milestone for representation.<\/p>\n \u201cBecause in the first film, we establish a Wakanda where women have equity with men, where women have agency and they very much influenced the direction of the plot, and we surrounded T\u2019Challa\u2026 and so in the loss of T\u2019Challa, it\u2019s only natural and organic that the women would be the ones most affected and then they\u2019d be the ones that we would follow [in the story].\u201d<\/p>\n She continued: \u201cI love that because it\u2019s organic, it\u2019s not anything that\u2019s forced or put upon, it\u2019s very much in the DNA. And what Wakanda shows us is a version of the world where women holding and having power is not remarkable, it\u2019s normal.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd that\u2019s the thing to aspire to, to a moment when it\u2019s not special that a woman is in charge, that a woman is playing an important pivotal role in society or in a story.\u00a0I think that\u2019s a very healthy thing to envision.\u201d<\/p>\n In addition to Nyong\u2019o and the aforementioned Letitia Wright, the film also includes prominent roles for the likes of Danai Gurira\u00a0as\u00a0Okoye, Dominique Thorne\u00a0as\u00a0Riri Williams \/ Ironheart, Florence Kasumba\u00a0as\u00a0Ayo, Angela Bassett\u00a0as\u00a0Ramonda and I May Destroy You\u2019s Michaela Coel\u00a0as\u00a0Aneka.<\/p>\n Additional reporting by David Craig.<\/em><\/p>\n Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is now playing in UK cinemas.
