It\u2019s been two decades in the making, but Martin McDonagh\u2019s Olivier award-winning play is coming to the West End.<\/p>\n
You\u2019ll recognise playwright and director Martin McDonagh from his blockbusters like In Bruges, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri, and the brand-new The Banshees of Inisherin<\/a>.<\/p>\n Now, McDonagh\u2019s play The Pillowman is coming to The Duke of York\u2019s Theatre in the West End for a limited time run. It\u2019ll be directed by Matthew Dunster, of Hangmen and A Very Very Very Dark Matter, and has an all-star cast, including Lily Allen and Steve Pemberton.<\/p>\n Lily Allen made her stage debut in McDonagh\u2019s 2:22 \u2013 A Ghost Story, and now she\u2019s back in the West End in 2023. Speaking about both Lily Allen and Steve Pemberton, McDonagh said: \u201cI am a huge admirer of both Steve Pemberton and Lily Allen \u2060\u2014 their intelligence, their wit, their fun \u2060\u2014 and having Lily play Katurian, the first time this role has been played by a woman in an English-speaking version, is just so, so exciting to me.\u201d<\/p>\n Commenting on the play itself, McDonagh also said: \u201cI\u2019m thrilled that The Pillowman is finally making its West End premiere. It\u2019s a play that\u2019s always been very close to my heart, in terms of its combination of dark comedy with its exploration of the nature of story-telling itself and the role of the artist in society.\u201d<\/p>\n And, boy, has the West End premiere been a long time coming!
