A third Princess Diaries movie is in the works at Disney \u2013 this is not a drill!<\/p>\n

The 2000s cult classic that launched Anne Hathaway\u2019s career and became a box office hit was followed by a sequel in 2004. Though there was talk of a third movie after Royal Engagement\u2019s release, it never materialised. Until now.<\/p>\n

The Hollywood Reporter<\/a> broke the news that Supergirl writer Aadrita Mukerji is currently working on a Princess Diaries 3 script at Disney. The new instalment is believed to be a continuation of Mia Thermopolis\u2019s story, rather than a reboot of the franchise, which is based on Meg Cabot\u2019s Princess Diaries novels<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Details on the sequel, including whether Hathaway and the Queen of Genovia herself Dame Julie Andrews will return, are currently scarce. But read on for everything we know about Princess Diaries 3 so far.<\/p>

However, the actress has publicly stated she would like to reprise the role of princess Mia Thermopolis and gave her support for a third outing.<\/p>\n\u201cI would more than entertain it, I\u2019m pulling for it,\u201d Hathaway told <a href=\"\/\/www.etonline.com\/anne-hathaway-says-shes-pulling-for-princess-diaries-3-exclusive-193058"\" target=\""_blank"\" rel=\""noopener" noopener noreferrer\">ET<\/a> in October 2022. \u201cIf there\u2019s any way to get Julie Andrews involved, I think we would make it work. We would go to where she was and put a green screen behind her and just make it happen.\u201d<\/p>\nIt may prove trickier than that, however, as Andrews previously told <a href=\"\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/princess-diaries-3-in-the-works-disney-1235261402\/"\" target=\""_blank"\" rel=\""noopener" noopener noreferrer\">THR<\/a> that it \u201cwould be too late to do it now.\u201d<\/p>\n\u201cThere was talk of a sequel many, many years ago. But I don\u2019t think it ever came to pass. And [director] Garry [Marshall] then did leave us [he died in 2016],\u201d she explained. \u201cIt\u2019s too far down the line now to go back to it. It\u2019s a lovely thought, but I don\u2019t think it would probably be possible.\u201d<\/p>\nAnother star who voiced her support was Mandy Moore, who played Mia\u2019s rival Lana Thomas. The This Is Us star said she \u201cwould be game\u201d to come back during an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show.<\/p>\n<h2>Princess Diaries 3 plot: What could happen?<\/strong><\/h2>\nIf the movie is indeed a continuation of Mia\u2019s story, there\u2019s many ways things could go. The movie\u2019s sequel veered in a completely different direction from the books, in which Mia ends up marrying her best friend\u2019s brother, Michael, after a lengthy relationship.<\/p>\nBut Robert Schwartzman, who played Michael in the first movie, didn\u2019t return for the sequel, which saw Chris Pine star as Mia\u2019s love interest \u2013 and potential heir to the Genovian throne \u2013 Lord Nicholas Devereaux.<\/p>\nThe film ended with Mia crowned Queen of Genovia after changing the law that meant she could only rule if she was married, and Nicholas professing his love. It also saw Julie Andrews\u2019s character propose to her bodyguard, Joe (H\u00e9ctor Elizondo).<\/p>\nA third movie might explore how Mia\u2019s rule differs from her grand-m\u00e8re\u2019s \u2013 we\u2019d expect a lot more slumber parties \u2013 and also give us an update on her love life.
