We follow\u00a0English Nurse Lib Wright (Florence Pugh)<\/a>, who has been hired to observe \u2018fasting girl\u2019 11-year-old Anna (K\u00edla Lord Cassidy) who apparently hasn\u2019t eaten for four months.<\/p>\n In 15 days\u2019 time, Nurse Wright and Sister Michael (Josie Walker), who are sharing the shifts, must present their testimony to the committee.<\/p>\n A religious miracle? Anna\u2019s parents (Elaine Cassidy and Caolan Byrne<\/a>) and many of the town\u2019s all-male committee, including the likes of Doctor McBrearty (Toby Jones) and Father Thaddeus (Ciar\u00e1n Hinds) certainly think so. Fraud? Lib \u2013<\/span>\u00a0a hard believer in medical facts \u2013<\/span>\u00a0and journalist Will Byrne (Tom Burke) are certain of it.<\/p>\n What follows is a gripping psychological thriller involving many clashing worldviews \u2013\u00a0faith and reason, religion and science \u2013\u00a0that comes to a dramatic head as the mystery becomes not so much about the mechanics of what is happening, but the reasons why.<\/span><\/p>\n So, what happens to Lib and does Anna die?\u00a0<\/span>Read on for everything you need to know about the ending of The Wonder.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n Initially, sceptical Lib expects she will have the mystery solved swiftly, but she grows increasingly frustrated as the days pass with no secret feeding apparent.\u00a0<\/span>In one scene, we see Lib try to force-feed Anna, shoving a feeding tube down her throat in an act of desperation before yanking it out, horrified by her actions.<\/span><\/p>\n It is only when Lib abandons her desire to expose trickery and her own rigid beliefs and adopts Anna\u2019s version of reality that family secrets crack wide open.<\/span><\/p>\n As it turns out, Anna has not been surviving on \u201cmanna from heaven\u201d and is actually being passed food when she is kissed by her mother.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n And the reasons for this are devastating: Anna is mourning a dead brother, who she explains gave her \u201cdouble love\u201d when she was nine\u00a0\u2013 the love given to a sister, and to a wife. By fasting and sacrificing herself, Anna hopes to enable his transition from purgatory to heaven rather than hell.<\/span><\/p>\n In a bid to put a stop to it all, Lib separates Anna from her parents. But disastrously, this only results in Anna deteriorating faster under her watch, with Rosaleen, who explains she wants her children to find happiness in heaven, and the obstinate town committee, who want Anna\u2019s situation to be either a religious or medical miracle, refusing to intervene.<\/p>\n In the end, Lib realises she must take matters into her own hands, urging a reluctant Will to help her get Anna to Dublin.<\/p>\n Lib then takes the child to the Holy Well and presents herself as a priest, telling Anna to to close her eyes. She awakens her by repeating the name \u2018Nan\u2019 \u2013 a rebirth that finally enables Anna to eat.<\/p>\n Lib, now on a roll, goes on to burn down the house where the watch was taking place, convincing the committee that Anna perished in the blaze after she knocked over a lamp. The committee argue over the validity of Lib\u2019s report and whether she should be charged, but eventually realise they themselves could be liable given she was their employee.<\/span><\/p>\n In a moving and optimistic finale, Lib returns to England where she meets up with Will and \u2018Nan\u2019.\u00a0<\/span>Under false names, they board a boat bound for Sydney, Australia, and we<\/span>\u00a0watch them eat at a table with other passengers at sea before the camera pans around, leaving the set and showing the audiences the huge studio that contains it.<\/span><\/p>\n At the end of The Wonder, as we\u2019re shown the studio set where The Wonder is being filmed, Niamh Algar, who plays the family servant Kitty, looks straight at the camera and says: \u201c<\/span>In, out, in, out.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n This is a reference to the thaumatrope that Will gave Anna early on in the film \u2013 the spinning toy that\u00a0<\/span>shows an optical illusion of a bird moving in and out of a cage \u2013 and is of course symbolic of Anna\u2019s freedom.<\/p>\n As mentioned above, The Wonder is bookended by an unusual framing device \u2013<\/span>\u00a0the studio set where the movie is being filmed.<\/p>\n At the beginning of the film, Algar invites us to believe in the story we are about to see, telling us: \u201cWe are nothing without stories.\u201d Later, in character as the family servant, Algar breaks the fourth wall again as Lib questions whether there is secret feeding going on. \u201cWe all have our stories,\u201d she says to the camera.<\/p>\n These breaks of the fourth wall serve to expose the film\u2019s artifice and draw our attention towards the power of fiction, mirroring the plot of The\u00a0Wonder: as Lib\u00a0is forced to abandon her rigid beliefs and adopt the child\u2019s version of reality in order to free her from it, we too are forced to question the validity of our beliefs.<\/p>\n In The Wonder, we see Kitty learning to read, which of course makes the character\u2019s involvement in the film\u2019s meta elements all the more pertinent.<\/p>\n Talking about the film\u2019s fourth wall breaks and how she approached the film\u2019s meta aspect, Algar told RadioTimes.com<\/a> in an exclusive interview: \u201cIt was sort of sitting down with Sebastian and figuring out what it was he wanted from that character, someone who is sort of introducing the story but is also in it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n She continued: \u201cIt\u2019s that idea of allowing the audience to be drawn into the story, we\u2019re giving them a wink and going: \u2018We\u2019re telling the story, stories are used in order to make sense of this world and inviting you in in the hope that you\u2019re going to believe in the characters and the story.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cAnd then we\u2019re in the story and every now and then, we see Kitty come up and it\u2019s almost like she\u2019s watching everything. She\u2019s watching Florence\u2019s character, and there\u2019s that intrigue, because for Kitty, language is something that she struggles with because she can\u2019t read and so therefore I think stories must have been quite difficult because she has to be told them, and she\u2019s wanting to learn to read and read the stories for herself, because that\u2019s a powerful tool for someone.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n The Wonder was released in UK cinemas on 4th November and comes to Netflix<\/a>\u00a0on Wednesday 16th November.
