style=\"&quot;font-weight:\">In real life, the bear ingested the cocaine, worth an estimated <\/span><span style=\"&quot;font-weight:\">$15m, <\/span><span style=\"&quot;font-weight:\">and subsequently overdosed, before it was discovered by officials searching for drugs dropped by an airborne smuggler, Andrew Thornton.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"&quot;font-weight:\">According to an <\/span><a href=\"\/\/apnews.com\/article\/1aa23991920be67a37fcb1908001dc0a&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"&quot;font-weight:\">Associated Press<\/span><\/a><span style=\"&quot;font-weight:\"> article from the time, authorities believed the bear had consumed \u201cseveral million dollars worth of the cocaine\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"&quot;font-weight:\">\u201cThe bear got to it before we could, and he tore the duffel bag open, got him some cocaine and OD\u2019d (overdosed),\u201d Gary Garner of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation explained to the outlet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"&quot;font-weight:\">\u201cThere\u2019s nothing left but bones and a big hide,\u201d he added of the animal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"&quot;font-weight:\">As for exactly how the cocaine ended up in the forest, it\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"&quot;font-weight:\">was believed that <\/span><span style=\"&quot;font-weight:\">Thornton, a former lawyer and narcotics police officer, had dumped the packages from his plane months earlier on his return from a cocaine haul in Colombia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"&quot;font-weight:\">After dropping the packages, Thornton put the plane on autopilot and <\/span><span style=\"&quot;font-weight:\">parachuted out with more cocaine attached to his body.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It was a move that ultimately resulted in his death after his parachute failed to open, and he was found\u00a0<span style=\"&quot;font-weight:\">in a driveway in Knoxville, Tennessee.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/archive\/lifestyle\/1985\/10\/20\/drew-thorntons-last-adventure\/982df601-7c8c-4955-a09c-b6d1f3b0a426\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_18&quot;\" style=\"&quot;font-weight:\">had $4,500 in cash on him, two guns, and the keys to the plane that had crashed into the mountains of North Carolina several hours away.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Investigators retraced the flightpath of Thornton\u2019s plane and eventually found nine duffel bags of cocaine.<\/p>\n<p>But, of course, the bear beat them to the 10th.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"&quot;font-weight:\">Three months after Thornton\u2019s death, the dead bear was discovered south of the state line between Tennessee and Georgia in the Chattahoochee National Forest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The bear\u2019s story doesn\u2019t end there, though.\u00a0<span style=\"&quot;font-weight:\">Kentucky For Kentucky retail store in Lexington, Kentucky has a stuffed bear on There isn\u2019t a mammal on the planet that could survive that,\u201d the medical examiner who performed the bear\u2019s necropsy told the store.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCerebral haemorrhaging, respiratory failure, hyperthermia, renal failure, heart failure, stroke.
