Coronation Street veteran William Roache has addressed his character Ken Barlow\u2019s doubts over his relationship with Wendy\u00a0Papadopoulos.<\/p>\n

Weatherfield\u2019s womaniser has rekindled his romance with Wendy (Roberta Kerr) but things got complicated following his former flame Martha Fraser\u2019s (Stephanie Beacham) return<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Ken and Martha go way back, as they first had an affair when he was still married to Deirdre<\/a> (Anne Kirkbride). Will he cave to his feelings for her this time?<\/p>

\u201cWendy has come back into his life and they\u2019ve realised they still have the same feelings for each other and now Martha coming back on the scene has complicated the issue,\u201d Roache said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe doesn\u2019t know how she\u2019s going to feel about him after the way he left her, he\u2019s embarrassed about that and he doesn\u2019t know if either of them are going to have the same feelings.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhereas with Wendy he does know, as they\u2019ve already said it to each other, so he is concerned about Martha now arriving at this time.\u201d<\/p>\n

The actor explained that Ken is fond of both women, who represent two very different lifestyles.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, he\u2019s physically attracted to them both obviously, and he did love them both, but they offer two very different lifestyles,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n

\u201cWendy is giving him his current lifestyle, slippers and cocoa, supper in front of the television and all that. Whereas Martha is offering him the life that he always dreamed about, the life of being with intellectuals and writers in London, the theatre and all those things that he himself wanted.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo that\u2019s where the dichotomy for Ken is \u2013 he\u2019s torn between two women. I think he does want his home comforts at this stage in his life and everything that Wendy offers, that\u2019s where his heart is now. However, although his heart may be there, his dreams are definitely with Martha.\u201d<\/p>\n

After Martha asks Ken to go to Hull with her, he has a big decision to make \u2013 much like he did when Martha urged him to follow her to London on a whim when he was still with Deirdre.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe really loves Martha, there\u2019s no doubt about that, and he really dreams of that lifestyle. But then he really loves Wendy and she would continue this comfortable life with him,\u201d Roache said.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo the decision that the writers have presented him with is the same but without Deirdre in the background. He does dream about this lifestyle with Martha, it\u2019s as strong as it ever was, so it\u2019s very interesting to play.\u201d<\/p>\n
