This week sees the debut of Dominic Savage\u2019s latest I Am film, I Am Ruth<\/a>, which stars Kate Winslet and her daughter Mia Threapleton as a mother and daughter, Ruth and Freya, struggling to connect with one another as their relationship becomes increasingly strained.<\/p>\n

As the film goes on, it becomes apparent that Freya is retreating into herself due to the pressures of social media, which is having a serious impact on her mental health.<\/p>\n

Speaking at a recent event for I Am Ruth attended by RadioTimes.com<\/a> and other press, Winslet revealed why she agreed to take part in the project, saying that Dominic Savage\u2019s improvisational filmmaking techniques made it both \u201cfascinating and terrifying\u201d to her.<\/p>\n

Winslet explained: \u201cDomi<\/span>ni<\/span>c approached me about doi<\/span>ng i<\/span>t and I<\/span> just i<\/span>mmedi<\/span>ately sai<\/span>d \u2018Yes. Yeah, whatever i<\/span>t i<\/span>s, let\u2019s do i<\/span>t.\u2019 Because I<\/span> knew how he worked, I<\/span> knew that he created the story wi<\/span>th the lead actor, and that everythi<\/span>ng was i<\/span>mprovi<\/span>sed. And the i<\/span>dea of that was fasci<\/span>nati<\/span>ng and terri<\/span>fyi<\/span>ng all at the sam<\/span>e ti<\/span>me.\u201d<\/p>\n

She continued: \u201cNot one word that cam<\/span>e out of our mouths i<\/span>s scri<\/span>pted, every si<\/span>ngle thi<\/span>ng we say we made up on the day, i<\/span>n the moment. Nothi<\/span>ng was wri<\/span>tten on a pi<\/span>ece of paper.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo I<\/span> knew that we\u2019d walk i<\/span>nto an envi<\/span>ronment that would be very experi<\/span>mental \u2013 where mi<\/span>stakes would be encouraged, actually, because i<\/span>t\u2019s that clunki<\/span>ness that makes i<\/span>t real and keeps i<\/span>t vi<\/span>sceral and hopefully makes people i<\/span>denti<\/span>fy wi<\/span>th these conversati<\/span>ons, because they are real conversati<\/span>ons.\u201d<\/p>\n

Winslet also noted that this made Threapleton\u2019s portrayal of Freya \u201cdoubly impressive\u201d, saying that for young actors it can be challenging to have \u201cthe courage to come forward wi<\/span>th an i<\/span>dea and feel that i<\/span>t wi<\/span>ll be heard and that you wi<\/span>ll be properly i<\/span>ncluded\u201d.<\/p>

Winslet continued:\u00a0\u201cOne of the thi<\/span>ngs that I<\/span> love about worki<\/span>ng wi<\/span>th young actors, not least, as i<\/span>t turns out, my daughter, i<\/span>s bei<\/span>ng able to be that person who says, \u2018Come on, I<\/span> was you one day, I<\/span> know what i<\/span>t feels li<\/span>ke, there\u2019s nothi<\/span>ng to be scared of.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cI<\/span>\u2018m just putti<\/span>ng them at thei<\/span>r ease and creati<\/span>ng a space i<\/span>n whi<\/span>ch they feel absolutely safe, and not only celebrated, but encouraged and set up for success.\u201d<\/p>\n

Winslet recently spoke about the real-life inspiration<\/a> behind I Am Ruth, as well as how the line between what\u2019s real and what isn\u2019t became \u201cblurred\u201d when working with her daughter<\/a>.<\/p>\n

I Am Ruth will air on Thursday 8th December at 9pm on Channel 4.<\/strong><\/p>\n
