Plebs star Tom Rosenthal has joked that he was being used as a Doctor Who<\/a> \u201cred herring\u201d before the announcement that Ncuti Gatwa<\/a> was set to take over as the iconic timelord.<\/p>\n

The comic actor \u2013 also famous for his role in Friday Night Dinner \u2013 made the remarks during an exclusive interview with RadioTimes.com<\/a> at a showcase for ITVX, speaking about why Plebs was coming to an end with this week\u2019s feature-length special Plebs: Soldiers of Rome.<\/p>

\u201cWe are just old,\u201d he said \u201cWe have to grow up, make some other TV shows.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe [Rosenthal] wants to do drama,\u201d added co-star and writer Tom Basden, which prompted Rosenthal to beg: \u201cPlease, please. James Bond.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u200cThe show\u2019s writer\/director Sam Leifer then pointed out that Rosenthal had often been on the list of possible actors to play the next Doctor Who, with the star quipping: \u201cI don\u2019t know who\u2019s put me on \u2013 some absolute joker at the BBC is using me as a red herring!\u201d<\/p>\n\nSpeaking more generally about why the show was coming to an end, Basden explained: \u201cI think, we\u2019ve just been doing it for a long time and this particular story \u2013 the idea of taking the boys to war \u2013 we\u2019ve been holding back for a long time, because we knew we wanted to do it but we wanted to kind of wait for the right moment and really do it properly.<\/p>\n\u201cAnd I really feel that now that we\u2019ve done that, I\u2019m not sure that we could really spin out any more stories set in Ancient Rome, so it\u2019s a combination of the fact that we\u2019ve just done it for a long time, we\u2019ve kind of got everything we could out of it in some ways and maybe it\u2019s time to move on.\u201d<\/p>\nLeifer added: \u201cWhat was a real privilege was knowing that this was the finale and so we could end it on our terms, which programme makers rarely get to do.
