An executive for ITV has said that Jeremy Clarkson will keep his job on game show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, following a storm of controversy around his recent comments regarding Meghan Markle.<\/p>\n

The broadcaster was the subject of intense criticism late last week after a column in The Sun, where he expressed a desire to see Markle \u201cmade to parade naked through the streets\u201d while crowds \u201cthrow lumps of excrement at her\u201d.<\/p>\n

The comments were made in response to Netflix<\/a> documentary Harry & Meghan<\/a>, in which the couple explain how negative treatment by the press was a factor in their stepping back from the royal family.<\/p>\n

After 20,000 complaints were made about the article to IPSO, the UK\u2019s press regulator, ITV Content Boss Kevin Lygo was questioned on whether the broadcaster\u2019s relationship with Clarkson would continue.<\/p>

Speaking to members of the Broadcasting Press Guild (via Deadline<\/a>), the executive first condemned Clarkson\u2019s comments, explaining they \u201cdid not represent our values,\u201d and adding: \u201cIt was awful and he has acknowledged that. I don\u2019t know what he was thinking.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, he went on to say that the controversial presenter would continue as the face of Who Wants to be a Millionaire?, which he took over from original host Chris Tarrant in 2018.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat [Clarkson] writes in a newspaper column is really more for [the press] to talk about than us,\u201d continued Lygo. \u201cWe have no control over what he says and hire him as a consummate broadcaster of the most famous quiz on TV.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lygo played down any connection between Clarkson\u2019s behaviour and other recent ITV host controversies, such as Piers Morgan storming off Good Morning Britain<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are 30 presenters on ITV every day and occasionally one steps over the mark,\u201d he added. \u201cJeremy\u2019s incident didn\u2019t happen on ITV and Piers\u2019s was two years ago \u2013 and he resigned amicably rather than being fired.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t want people ranting and raving and so forth but on live TV people, occasionally, slightly lose the plot.\u201d<\/p>\n

After fierce backlash, Clarkson issued a response on Twitter<\/a> about his comments on Markle.<\/p>\n

His statement read: \u201cOh dear. I\u2019ve rather put my foot in it. In a column I wrote about Meghan, I made a clumsy reference to a scene in Game of Thrones and this has gone down badly with a great many people.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m horrified to have caused so much hurt and I shall be more careful in future.\u201d<\/p>\n

RadioTimes.com<\/a> has approached Amazon for an update on its projects with the presenter \u2013 including The Grand Tour<\/a> and Clarkson\u2019s Farm<\/a> \u2013 but is yet to receive a response.<\/p>\n
