Given the Wild Hunt\u2019s shocking appearance at the close of The Witcher\u2019s second season, it\u2019s surprising to see him appear in a prequel set 1,200 years before \u2013 but it\u2019s all part of showrunners Lauren Schmidt Hissrich and Declan de Barra\u2019s plan.<\/span><\/p>\n Speaking exclusively to <\/span>RadioTimes.com<\/span><\/a>, Blood Origin showrunner de Barra explained the importance of introducing Eredin prior to his leader status: \u201cIf we presented the morally dark character we expect from the books, there\u2019s no progression<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThe joy is in the genesis of the character. Making someone go \u2018how do you get the character in the book from <\/span>this <\/span><\/i>person?\u2019 Then you start to see the seeds being sown, and you go, \u2018Ahh, I understand!\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Although Eredin falls more into Blood Origin\u2019s camp of antagonists, there\u2019s a clear sympathy explored through his clandestine relationship with lover Br\u00edan, played by <\/span>It\u2019s A Sin\u2019s Nathaniel Curtis<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n There\u2019s an intentional moral greyness to every villain in Blood Origin, and that\u2019s by design, with de Barra saying: \u201cI love when there\u2019s a horrible character and you kind of end up falling in love with them a little.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Eredin plays a key role in Blood Origin\u2019s converging stories, shifting and developing in response to a Continent growing increasingly unstable by the minute.<\/span><\/p>\n His presence in the spin-off also demonstrates how these standalone Witcher stories are not only explanations of the past, but also set up The Witcher\u2019s future seasons moving forward, as Hissrich explains: \u201cBy introducing Eredin in Blood Origin, we\u2019ve given him a purpose.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cWe understand now why he\u2019s interested in Ciri and the world \u2013 but what\u2019s added is understanding not just how he\u2019s hardened, but why he\u2019s become the Leader of the Wild Hunt. To me, just having those layers of empathy is everything.\u201d<\/span><\/p> What Blood Origin adds to the character of Eredin is a depth and emotional complexity, allowing us a glimpse into the devastating impact landmark events like the Conjunction of the Spheres can have on people.<\/span><\/p>\n It\u2019s a key conclusion de Barra hopes people will register: \u201cMoving forward with the future of Eredin, you won\u2019t just see him as a Machiavellian villain but instead as a survivor.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n The Witcher: Blood Origin arrives on Netflix on Christmas Day 2022.
