Senior VP of a top London investment bank Anthony Drinkwater, who has links to Italian mafia clan the \u2018<\/span>Ndrangheta, <\/span>is found dead after falling from a skyscraper. And an undercover police officer named Christopher who was looking into the organised crime group is also believed to have been murdered and fed to some pigs.<\/p>\n During her examination of the dead swine, Nikki uncovers an SD card containing key evidence.<\/p>\n \u201cChris thought he was getting close,\u201d says National Crime Agency boss Laine Cassidy. \u201cHe thought he\u2019d uncovered a major asset in the city, right at the top, hiding in plain sight.\u201d<\/p>\n While working late at the lab, Nikki receives a threatening note, handed to her by Chloe, one of her students, which reads: \u201cDelete the files. Destroy the card. No police.\u201d<\/p>\n Despite the warning, Nikki takes the card and the note to the authorities in the hope that it will lead them to the wife and daughter of Stephen Ross, who is currently being held in police custody.<\/p>\n But it emerges that Stephen\u2019s daughter has been right under Nikki\u2019s nose for quite some time.<\/p>\n In the final moments of episode 1, the pathologist learns that Chloe is Stephen\u2019s daughter Serena, and like her father she is under the control of the \u2018Ndrangheta.<\/span><\/p>\n Serena tells Nikki to go to the safe house where her dad is being kept and kill him to prevent him from spilling any more of the group\u2019s secrets.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cWe don\u2019t have a choice,\u201d says Serena. \u201cEither you kill him, or they kill me and my mother. And they\u2019ll get my brother, too. It\u2019s just a matter of time.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd then they\u2019ll come for you.\u201d<\/p> As you\u2019d expect, Nikki is appalled by her predicament.<\/p>\n \u201cYou want me to kill your father?!\u201d she says, her horror palpable.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s him or us,\u201d replies Serena before she\u2019s summoned by those who control her, leaving Nikki alone in the street with her dilemma.<\/p>\n Silent Witness continues on Tuesday 3rd January at 9pm on BBC One.
